Vintage Report

The 2016 vintage was certainly one of the longest-lasting in recent years. After mild temperatures in January and February, we had a temperature drop in March accompanied by plenty of rain. The “late” temperature drop slowed down the vegetative cycle. Spring began with a considerable amount of rain with average temperatures. This vegetative delay continued until the end of the summer, which also began slowly but extended until the end of September. The picking of the Nebbiolo followed the classic order: first Barbaresco and Nebbiolo d’Alba, then Barolo. Full ripening was achieved in all cases with no technological or phenological problems. The late development seen in the early part of the year was made up for during the months of August and September. In particular, the second half of September was crucial for the components that determine the structure of the wines, especially the accumulation of phenolic substances.

In stainless-steel, temperature controlled, automatic pump-over; 100% indigenous yeast.
- Malolactic: 100% in steel fermentors
- Aging: 2 years in large oak barrels, followed by 6 months in bottle. Bottled without filtration.

Elvio Cogno Cascina Nuova Barolo DOCG – 2016 – Decanter – 93 Points
The Novello township has gained renown largely thanks to the Elvio Cogno estate which counts 11.5 of its 15 hectares in the cru of Ravera. Cascina Nuova is the most accessible of the property’s four Baroli, assembling fruit from a 1.5ha site of young plantings. The nose radiates prettiness: strawberry and raspberry underpin dewy rose, lilac and anise. Plump, succulent fruit remains buoyant and is gracefully buttressed by fine yet persistent structure. Zesty orange flavours refresh the finish.

A layered and transparent red with dark-plum, peach and cherry aromas and flavors. It’s full and wonderfully integrated with excellent tannins that melt into the wine. Needs at least four or five years to open. A beautiful Barolo for the cellar. Drink after 2023.

Fruit from Valter and Nadia Fissore's younger vines in the Ravera cru yielded a dynamic wine in 2016. It opens with scents of fresh roses and brims with flavors of juicy black cherry and plum, all of it laced with fennel pollen and orange zest. The snappy fruit tones have a pristine ripeness, propelled by brisk acidity toward a vibrant, balanced finish.
