Domaine Leflaive 2019 Puligny Release

Domaine Leflaive’s roots in Puligny Montrachet stretch back to 1717, and with that 300+ year history comes an unparalleled understanding of the legendary vineyards. 2019 was not an easy year, requiring enormous skill on the part of the vignerons to keep the grapes on track for balanced ripening despite frost, heat and drought. A combination of the Domaine’s long-held biodynamic practices and their relentless dedication to preserving quality above all else coincided with the unique growing conditions to produce wines of startling beauty that continue to reveal themselves in the bottle.

Led by fourth generation Brice de La Morandière and Winemaker Pierre Vincent, the winery’s range of Puligny-Montrachet wines includes four Grands Crus and four Premier Crus in addition to the Puligny-Montrachet Village wine, plus a Meursault Premier Cru Sous le Dos d’Âne, a Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru La Maltroie, and a Bourgogne Blanc sourced exclusively in the

town of Puligny-Montrachet. Brice calls the 2019 wines “well balanced between an elegant minerality and a certain

generosity on the palate.”

Each wine weights these elements differently, with the Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru gaining richness from its deeper, heavier soils, while the Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru’s higher altitude and gravel soils bring forward the minerality.

The differences are disarmingly intricate between the Premier Cru vineyard holdings in Les Pucelles, Les Combettes, Les Folatières, and Clavoillon, where Leflaive owns over 85% of the cru at 11.84 acres. The nuanced variances in soil type, altitude, exposition and ultimately climat always shine through, but the overall intensity of the 2019 vintage elevates these elements and paints a rich aromatic picture of Puligny-Montrachet.
