Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino: The 2013 and 1983 Biondi-Santi Brunello di Montalcino Riservas

Earlier this year I published a spotlight on new releases from Montalcino’s Biondi-Santi. In that article, I reviewed the 2017 Rosso di Montalcino and the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino.
This little article focuses on two wines from the winery’s historic library. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a current release, and the 1983 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is part of the estate’s late-release program. Both wines show stunning freshness and depth, a reminder of the slightly cooler conditions seen in both years. Sangiovese loves a long and steady growing season without weather extremes for slow ripening and a late harvest. That’s exactly what it got in both 2013 and 1983. The stunning detail and acidity shown by both these wines is what will guide them over the course of their respective bottle evolutions.
