Chardonnay, Maté’s Vineyard, Kumeu – 2010 – 92 points – Wine & Spirits
92 points

“Mate Brajkovich replanted this vineyard in 1990, the site of the original vineyard he and his family purchased in 1944. It is now the only Kumeu River vineyard planted to the Mendoza clone, its roots working through clay soils to reach sandstone, where the ground retains enough moisture for this to be dry farmed. Mate’s sone, Michael, is a Master of Wine. He worked with those deep-rooted vines to produce an earthy 2010. It contrasts the oak savor of its native yeast fermentation in barrel with the spiciness of chardonnay skins, and melds the creaminess of full malolactic fermentation with fresh acidity that has the snap of parsnips.”
