Chardonnay, Maté’s Vineyard, Kumeu – 2011 – 97 Points, Top 100 Wines of 2014 – jamessuckling.com
97 points

“The Top 100 Wines of 2014 below are based primarily on ratings. I considered all wines that scored 96 points or more during the past 11 months, and that had at least 6,000 bottles in production. Finally, I ordered the wines according to what I thought were the most exciting: the ones with the wow factor.

“#19 Kumeu River 2011 Mate’s Vineyard Chardonnay

“The flagship Kumeu chardonnay delivers Montrachet-like richness and deep complexity. The weight is staggering but the poise and balance makes it all seem effortless. Ripe peach and pear, citrus and gently toasty oak, with chalk and nougat, too. The palate has terrific concentration and impressive layering and build, crescendos with impressive energy and then fades with sizzling acidity holding it in place, with a grilled-hazelnut finish.”
