The 2008 Tokaji Mézes Mály 6-Puttonyos has a seductive nose of unadulterated orange zest, mango and passion fruit aromas that display exquisite delineation. The viscous palate offers impressive balance and wonderful purity, and the judicious oxidative edge on the finish takes it up another level. Impressive.

Royal Tokaji focuses most of its energy on aszú wines—a sweet style on which the region has based its fame. However, they’ve been working on dry wines for more than a decade; their flagship dry bottling, now called The Oddity, is regularly one of the region’s best. This rarer bottling, from the iron rich Szt. Bright orange-gold. Smells lighter and livelier than the Betsek, offering fruitier aromas of peach and apricot. Then fresh, high-pitched and tight on the palate, with lively acidity framing and lifting the flavors of orange zest, apricot and spices. Finishes youthful, silky and long. Like the Betsek, this is a blend of furmint, Hárslevelü and yellow Muscat.

This 100% Hungarian dry Furmint has aromas of white flowers, peach and ripe apricot. In the mouth, it is well balanced with flavors of peach, lemon zest and fresh apricot, and it has a crisp, pleasantly tart finish.

Although this is ripe and decadent, it’s also very polished and inviting. Dried plums, tar, menthol, licorice and caramelized oranges and cedar are all in play. The tannins are enormous, but they’re covered in dark-chocolate notes and enhanced by vibrant dark fruit. Full-bodied and long on the luxurious finish. Drink from 2026.

This is a plush, ripe red with dried plums and notes of tar and ash, as well as a touch of menthol. Full-bodied and ripe, but structured and dialed-in. Decadent on the finish. With a tad less alcohol, this would score even more highly. Drink from 2023.

Welcome to the black hole of Umbrian red wine where you get to experience a new level of tannic density, but this is also married to extraordinary ripeness. For all this, a surprisingly clean and elegant finish. Very savory. Drink or hold.

Very powerful and tannic with ripe blackberry and elderberry aromas. This has good enough harmony to be good with cassoulet and other hearty winter dishes.

The plush elderberries and hints of peperoncino and balsamic work rather well with the dried cedar and dark chocolate. Full-bodied and nicely indented in furrows of chewy tannins revealing dark fruit and detailed acidity. Drink now.

This wine is a rich, smooth blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah. The ripe, smooth texture gives intensity and complexity to this wine that should be ready to drink from late 2019.

Shimmering orange-pink. Powerful, oak-spiced aromas of nectarine, strawberry, blood orange, vanilla and honey, plus a hint of smoky minerality in the background. Deep-pitched, mineral-driven red berry and pit fruit flavors pick up fennel, vanilla and candied lavender nuances with air.
