This shows really decadent, wild aromas and flavors of meat, game and forest floor. Dried fruit, such as strawberry and orange peel. Medium to full body. Creamy and focused finish. Balanced and tight. Really savory at the end. Why wait? Drink it.

Cabernet Sauvignon Route 29, Napa Valley – 2017

The Tasting Panel
91 Points

Named for a north-to-south throughway that traverses Napa Valley, this blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Cab Franc with small portions of Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Merlot exudes aromas of mint, cedar, and ripe blackberry. The nose mimics the palate, which sees the addition of a dusting of chocolate as well as violets and savory Italian herbs.

Castello di Volpaia
Coltassala, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG – 2016

Wine & Spirits
93 Points

September rains and cool temperatures at harvest mitigated the hot, dry summer of 2016 here, allowing Volpaia to bring in a juicy Chianti Classico. Its red cherry flavors are concentrated enough to easily absorb the vanilla spice gained during its two years in new French oak barrels, the wine maintaining energy lift through the finish.

Arnaldo Caprai
Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG Valdimaggio – 2015

Wine & Spirits
93 Points

From 4.9 acres of 40-year-old vines that surround the winery, this is impressively ripe and concentrated. A two-year spell in French oak barriques added notes of clove, dark chocolate and baking spice to its blackberry and plum fruit. Notes of tobacco and fresh loam balance the rich flavors, though the gun-metal tannis call for several years of cellaring.

Castello di Volpaia
Balifico, Toscana IGT – 2016

Wine & Spirits
93 Points

From 20-25 year old vines planted in the sandstone soils of Volpaia's Balifico vineyard, this marries sangiovese's bright red-cherry flavors with the dark, leafy tannins of cabernet sauvignon (35 percent of the blend). The wine aged in French oak barrels for 18 months, gaining subtle spice notes and pleasant savory tones.

Tenuta Sette Cieli
Scipio, Toscana IGT – 2015

Wine & Spirits
90 Points

The warm, dry 2015 growing season brought full ripeness to the cabernet franc growing in Tenuta Sette Cieli's hillside vineyards overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. The wine is rich and soft, the flavors of red and black berries framed by notes of dark chocolate and sweet spice gained from two years in French oak barrels (40 percent new). Ample alcohol (15 percent) adds weight and warmth to the finish.

Schramsberg Vineyards
J. Schram Rosé, North Coast – 2011

Wine & Spirits
90 Points

This is a blend of Schramsberg's top lots culled from 115 vineyards, mostly in Napa-Carneros and Sonoma Coast (41 percent each), with contributions from Anderson Valley and Marin. It's more chardonnay (69 percent) than pinot noir, and 40 percent of the lot fermented in barrels. After seven years of aging in bottle on the lees, the wine has a rich, nutty autolysis character as well as enough firm acidity to structure its ripe raspberry sweetness. Serve it at the start of a meal with mousse truffée, or at the end, with a lightly sweetened berry tart.

Black-skinned berry, violet, new leather and tobacco aromas are front and center. Reflecting the nose, the smooth, approachable palate doles out juicy Marasca cherry, ripe plum, nutmeg and a hint of licorice framed in polished, pliant tannins. Drink through 2024.

Swirling, spiced-biscuit and blue-fruit aromas with an earthy edge, too. The palate has a very supple and sweetly flavorful edge that carries ample, succulent fruit flavor and a ripe build of fleshy tannin to close. Drink now.

Royal Tokaji
Szt. Tamás, 6 Puttonyos, Tokaj – 2013

Wine Enthusiast
100 Points — Cellar Selection

Brillaint gold-flecked-amber in the glass, this Hungarian stunner hails from the Szt. Tamás vineyard located on one of the Tokaj's most iconic hills. It has aromas of wildflower honey, ripe peach, honeysuckle blossom, fresh sliced apricot and acacia flowers. It is an ethereal blend of Furmint, Hårslevelü and Muscat. Silky smooth on entry, it offers enticing flavors of white peach, apricot preserves, honeycomb and acacia honey. It has beautiful heft on the palate with balanced acidity and crisp minerality. The elegant sweetness is perfectly foiled by bracing acidity and crispness in the finish.

This wine expresses the structure as well as the richly perfumed fruits of the appellation. Its dry core is still present, keeping the wine fresh for its maturity. Let this wine wait a little longer and drink from late 2020.

Boysenberry, leather, turned earth and forest rise to the fore of this coastal wine, from a high-elevation site above the ocean. Juicy and offering length and breadth, it is both rich and riddled in acid-driven tension, providing powerful flavor and intensity.

This has attractive complexity with honey, chamomile and toasted bread, ahead of bright, light pink grapefruit and berries. The palate has a very succulent and juicy feel with the same blend of pink-fruit flavors. Fresh crunch of acidity. A blend of 81% pinot noir and 19% chardonnay. Drink now.
