Château Simard
Saint-Émilion – 2004

Wine & Spirits
88 points

"Simard is released as a ten-year-old wine, when it's mature and ready to drink. This vintage is lean and peppery, still firmly structured, with a lot of barnyard funk. If you don't mind Brett, it's a classical red for lamb."

Double Eagle
Red Wine, Napa Valley – 2011

The 2011 Double Eagle displays aromas and flavors of cedar, caramelized anise, cassis, cocoa, sage and green olive. The wine is shy at first; it then expands to a lovely full symphony of licorice, lavender and black currants.

“Fragrant with Victoria plum fruit and a touch of blossom. Wonderfully dry and firm on the palate, the tannins giving it a light but welcome structure. Both appetising and refreshing, and long with a grip on the finish boding well for the table."

Royal Tokaji
Furmint, The Oddity, Tokaj – 2010

Wine & Spirits
89 points, Best Buy

"From a very wet vintage, this is much lighter than the 2011, with a golden apple scent and a bit of honeyed spice, yet it's still very much compelling, with a nervosity that gives it energy. For a creamy fish paprikash."

Royal Tokaji
Late Harvest, Tokaj – 2010

Wine & Spirits
93 points, Best Buy

"It rained so much in 2010 -- nearly half of the harvest season -- that Royal Tokaji didn't produce any Aszu wines at all. What healthy, late-harvest grapes they did manage to collect went into the Mad Cuvee (Called Ats Cuvee in Hungary, after the former winemaker who developed it). It's dynamic, and totally Tokaji in character, though it's not particularly sweet -- 'I could drink a whole bottle of this tmyself,' said one taster, remarking on its balance and deliciousness. The fruit feels full but weightless, all burnt orange marmalade and sweet peach; the acidity and minerality keep it edgy and buoyant, and allow it to finish clean."
