“Elegant, aromatically expressive and also ready to drink. Sweet red cherry, cedar, mint, tobacco and worn-in leather add layers of nuance. There's a fair bit of Ravera tannin that gives the wine shape, but all the elements are nicely balanced.”

“Superb. Silky and soft, with gorgeous textural finesse, the 2017 is all class right out of the gate. Hints of rose petal, orange zest, cinnamon and star anise meld into sweet red cherry and raspberry fruit. It’s a gorgeous, gorgeous wine in every way.”—EG

“A powerful, rustic wine. Wild cherry, cedar, leather, orange zest, tobacco, herbs, menthol, iron and game race across the palate.”

“Enticing aromas of cherry, strawberry, hay, sweet grass and iron mark this smooth, velvety red. Shows ample structure, yet this is harmonious overall, with a beam of pure cherry lingering.”

“The 2018 vintage shows an early exuberance in its red-cherry and raspberry flavors heightened by scents of rose petals and balsamic herbs. The tannins, while taut, are a bit softer and rounder in this vintage.”

“A very pretty, expressive wine that marries the natural power of this site with a good deal of finesse, a pretty appealing combination in my book. Powerful and yet classic in bearing, the 2019 offers up generous red-fleshed fruit, spice, rose petal, orange peel and dried herbs.”

“Deep-set nose of bright, spicy cherry with layers of minerals, from chalk to river stones. Medium-to full-bodied with really nicely placed, still firm tannins and excellent spicy and mineral drive on the finish. There’s a cool feel to the palate. This is in the full bloom of youth and, though attractive now, will age nicely.”

The savory palate combines elegance and structure, delivering juicy red cherry, raspberry compote, star anise and wild mint framed in taut, refined tannins that give it a smooth but firm texture. "Defying the heat of the scorching vintage, this fragrant red has aromas of iris, violet, wild berry, leather and eucalyptus. On the full-bodied, delicious palate, fresh acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins support dried cherry, nutmeg and licorice before a tobacco finish."

“The 2018 Barolo Cascina Nuova is fine-tuned with plenty of wild berry, cassis, grilled herb and crushed stone. The aromas are quite classic for Nebbiolo, but what stands out here is the directness and freshness with which they are delivered. The tannins are tucked carefully inside the smooth, silky character of this elegant wine.”

“The Elvio Cogno 2018 Barolo Ravera is becoming one of the most important wines in Novello, and it performs very nicely in this more challenging vintage. The wine shows small-berry detailing with rust and crushed stone at the back. There is a point of bitterness that accompanies the tannins of this full-bodied wine.”

“This is a beautiful wine that is bright, punchy, tart, lively and fruity all at once. The Elvio Cogno 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo Montegrilli does its best to satisfy your easy-drinking needs. The wine concludes with an elegant dusting of crushed stone.”

“The Elvio Cogno 2016 Barolo Riserva Ravera Vigna Elena represents a tremendous effort and a wine that makes the best of an iconic vintage and a celebrated territory. The Ravera cru of Novello is making some of the best new Barolos today, and it definitely made some of the best expressions from the 2016 vintage. The bouquet is mostly primary and bright, but there are light hints of age that are already beginning to appear. They include licorice, tar and camphor ash.”

“The 2017 Barolo Ravera Bricco Pernice shows generous inner fiber and richness with dried cherry, blackberry, plum and dark spice. I love the especially smooth and soft quality to what is a powerful and lasting wine.”
