GAJA
Conteisa Barolo DOP — 2019

The Wine Advocate
97

“The Gaja 2019 Barolo Conteisa is a smooth operator with forest floor, dried fruit, autumn leaf and pickled plum from Japan with elements of both saltiness and sweetness. Conteisa goes for the high notes with floral tones, violet and something brittle like a laurel leaf. Its texture is very silky and tight. The wine persists with a smooth and long tenor.”

GAJA
Costa Russi DOP — 2020

The Wine Advocate
95

“The Gaja 2020 Barbaresco Costa Russi has a rose and floral note that emerges at first, and it doesn't have the heavy dark earth or cured leather aromas that we get in the Barbaresco. This wine is focused on fruit tones, bright ones, and those nuances are juicy, generous and long. There's more youth in this wine, and the tannins are extremely fine and silky. Count on this wine to improve with age.”

Sori San Lorenzo — 2020

The Wine Advocate

“The Gaja 2020 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo has bright cherry, currant and underbrush. This wine is very pretty in the mouth, especially if you considered the silky nature of the weightless tannins. The San Lorenzo is fueled by a long finish and does not drop off on the mid-palate. It keeps going strong with red fruits, high notes and balanced acidity. The wood tannins are melted into the wine's fine texture.”

Sori Tildin — 2020

The Wine Advocate

“The Gaja 2020 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn appears more mineral-driven and timid on first nose. It shows bright, underripe fruit, which is great for it future evolution; however, the mouthfeel proves immediately expressive and generous. There is plenty of fruit to push it forward in time with more bottle age. The whole package is very elegant and fine.”

Barbaresco DOP — 2020

The Wine Advocate

“The Gaja 2020 Barbaresco reveals a slow and steady approach with elegant Nebbiolo nuances, lots of pretty intensity and bright primary fruit all the way to the far end of the mouthfeel. The bouquet has hints of toasted cumin, spice and cured leather. There's special depth to the mouthfeel that is pushed forward by freshness, integrated tannins and savory earthy end notes. The style is modern-classic.”

GAJA
Sperss Barolo DOP — 2019

The Wine Advocate

“This wine offers a delicate embroidery of earth, crushed rose, rusty nail and dark currant. The Gaja 2019 Barolo Sperss also has hints of smoke or camphor ash, and the entire wine is very polished and seamless with underripe dark fruit or sottobosco (undergrowth) that carries through to the end. This is one of the most powerful of Gaja's latest releases, yet the wine is also profoundly elegant.”

Costa Russi DOP — 2020

“Compact clay soils and cooler micro-climate make this the most fragrant of Gaja's three single-vineyard Barbaresco bottlings. Delicate but ripe cherry aromas with touches of herbs and earth introduce a finely structured palate; soft and gentle but with brooding power lurking underneath. Its floral and balsamic notes reflect the cool site, while the gorgeous finish is pretty and pure.”

“This has a darker, denser profile compared to Costa Russi's cool fragrance: scents of red and black cherry, pomegranate and raspberry accompany ripe, intense and fragrant dark cherry flavours, with some chocolate and wood notes. There's lovely freshness to provide balance, while the long, vibrant cherry finish is rounder and creamier than Costa Russi.”

“The closest of Gaja's three crus to the Tanaro river, the vineyard is more humid and temperatures in the summer are mild. ‘Nebbiolo loves humidity,’ asserted Gaia Gaja, who pointed out that the higher limestone content in the soils here results in thicker skins, giving better resistance to mildew and also resulting in more tannins in the wine. The textural tannins are immediately obvious in this 2020, supporting delicate, fragrant and sapid dark forest fruits, overlaid with scents of dried cherry and earth."

“Elements of eucalyptus and juniper grace the cherry and raspberry fruit in this intense, complex red. Mineral and spice accents chime in as this builds to a long aftertaste. The texture is supple and there's plenty of energy on the resonant finish, where a chalky feel adds to the overall appeal.”
