  • Introduction

    • This wine is produced from a vineyard owned by Tim and Angela Coddington, whose grapes have been used in the Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay since 1998. It is a vineyard that produces very rich and opulent Chardonnay that we have often thought could make an excellent single-vineyard wine. In 2006 we decided to give Coddington single-vineyard status to reflect this vineyard’s unique character.

  • Vineyard Profile

    • Vineyard Region: Kumeu, Auckland, North Island, New Zealand

  • Vintage Report

    • 2007 proved a little cooler than 2006, with harvest dates behind 2006 one week on average, and sugar levels that were not quite as high. Consequently, the acid levels are marginally higher, and the wines have a more mineral feel to them. Citrus and stonefruit flavors are in abundance, and the wines have great length and texture. Once again, we had a very clean vintage without damage from botrytis.

  • Tasting Notes

    • The 2007 vintage was beautifully ripe and suited this vineyard where we often achieve the highest level of ripeness. The wine from the Coddington Vineyard shows the typical ripe, peachy fruit we expect from this site, and this year we see it bit more depth and structure in the wine. The palate is forward, with a luxurious creamy texture and lovely balancing acidity. This wine, while delicious in its youth, will benefit from a period of bottle maturation of two to four years.

  • Chardonnay, Coddington, Kumeu – 2007 – 5 stars, Wines of the Year – Decanter

“Rich and bold nose with underlying complexity and finesse. Good use of oak. Gently creamy. Fresh, lovely, clean palate. Good restraint and complexity. This is very well made with excellent balance and length.”

  • Chardonnay, Coddington, Kumeu – 2007 – 90 points – Wine & Spirits

“Michael Brakjovich, MW, makes this wine from his family’s vineyards and winery northwest of Auckland. The Coddington Vineyard produced a 2007 that’s pleasantly sweet, with barrel fermentation building the mineral expression of the wine.”

  • Chardonnay, Coddington, Kumeu – 2007 – 90 points – Wine Spectator

“Silky in texture and lively in flavor, offering pretty pear and floral flavors. Hints at lime on the lingering finish.”

  • Chardonnay, Coddington, Kumeu – 2007 – 92 points – The Tasting Panel

“Lush, ripe and dense with rich fruit and a core of bright acidity; bracing, racy and pure with lovely balance and a long finish; one of four stunning Chards from this important Kiwi winery.”
