Familia Torres
Forcada, DO Penedès
Since the 1980's, Familia Torres has been recovering ancestral varieties to restore Catalonia's viticultural heritage and combat climate change. Launched by Miguel A. Torres in the early 1980s, the aim is to discover varieties that survived the phylloxera plague that devastated European vineyards in the late 19th century. Today, the fifth generation of the Torres family are firm proponents of this project, with the ambition of making unique, exciting wines based on forgotten varieties. They are little winemaking gems that also stand out for their resistance to drought and high temperatures, making them particularly interesting in light of a warming climate. Of the more than 50 varieties recovered so far, six have proved extremely promising.
Forcada, was rediscovered by Famila Torres in the northwestern part of DO Penedès, in the foothills of the Roca Forcada Mountain, near Vall de Bianya. The variety does very well in the region’s clay soils. Grown at 450 meters, away from the sea’s influence, and surprising for its aromatic intensity and freshness. Forcada is an unique white grape, ripening at the end of the season and one of the last varieties of the Familia Torres harvest each year.
Forcada has been approved by the board that regulates the Penedès appellation and is planted in two Familia Torres vineyards in Alt Penedès, in the Alts d’Ancosa subzone: Mas Palau, in the Santa Maria de Miralles municipality at 550 metres above sea level, and Les Escostes, in La Llacuna, an old vineyard at 700 metres with terraces and dry stone walls that were recovered in 2020 which will truly find the ripening limits for this variety. These vineyards were planted in 2014.

Delicately aromatic, offering a blend of floral notes, lively citrus, fresh-cut grass and sun-dried Mediterranean herbs. A balanced acidity complements the nutty undertones, creating a satisfying weight on the palate. While complex and layered with mineral depth, this wine remains refreshingly approachable.

"Subtly aromatic, with floral, vibrant citrus and deep orchard fruit notes. The aromatic allure is balanced by a good acid drive and a nutty weight on the palate. There’s complexity and mineral depth but also a very approachable drinkability."
