  • Introduction

    • Nebbiolo has always been one of the most beautiful grapes of the Langhe, able to express new nuances and emotions to those who cultivate and vinify it with respect. It is a meaningful gift and great ambassador of its land of origins. Montegrilli is born in the vineyards with the objective of becoming a genuine and focused wine that shows the true personality of the nebbiolo grape.

With this in mind, we produce a wine without any aging in wood in order to differentiate it clearly from Barolo, creating a product with great immediacy and drinkability.

  • Vintage Report

    • The 2019 harvest is characterized by a slight decrease in terms of yields, around -15%, which benefitted quality and balance. We find the same balance if we look at the weather conditions through the year, despite a prolonged drought in the first three months followed by rain and low temperatures from April until the end of May. The plant growth underwent initially a slow kickoff, with a delay of two weeks compared to the previous year, but similar to more typical and traditional vintages. The month of June, with sunny climate and soil characterized by great water availability, created conditions for a flourishing plant growing, which required careful management of our vineyards by thinning during the summer.

After a particularly hot and dry period between end of June and beginning of July, the summer season continued with milder temperatures alternating with well-distributed rainfall. Compared to the anticipated vintage, the abundant plant growth made it possible for the grape ripening to slow down, creating an optimal amount of time for phenolic ripeness, particularly on the Nebbiolo, which was finally harvested in the second part of October. Overall, the grapes present good parameters and high quality, showing a perfect phenolic ripeness, nice sugar content and substantial acidity. The 2019 harvest may be considered a traditional one, with a balanced growing season and a very late ripening comparing to previous vintages, giving the wines the right qualities for a potentially long aging.

  • Tasting Notes

    • The 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo Montegrilli is a terrific wine that faithfully represents what a young and drinkable Nebbiolo means. One-third of the wine undergoes carbonic maceration in order to remove some of the tannic astringency and focus on primary fruit aromas. Crunchy small red berries and a hint of white pepper go together with silky tannins, freshness and a wonderful mouth-watering feeling

  • Elvio Cogno Montegrilli Nebbiolo Langhe DOC — 2019 – The Wine Advocate – 92+ Points

This is a terrific Piedmont red to pair with a classic quiche Lorraine. The Elvio Cogno 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo Montegrilli is a delicate and fragile expression with bright accents of chopped mint and medicinal herb that hover over a core of wild cherry and dried raspberry. The wine delivers soft and smooth aromas that define the character of this pretty wine. Dusty tannins and some lingering mineral notes frame a polished finish. A portion of the wine sees whole-cluster fermentation, and winemaking is straightforward in stainless steel. Some 10,000 bottles were released.
