  • Introduction

    • Core is the name of the cru from which the grapes hail. The name has its origins in a vineyard that has always been called, “core,” by the farmers of Montoni. In Sicilian, “core” means heart. In fact, seen from above, the vineyard is the shape of a heart.

  • Vintage Report

    • The 2020 vintage was marked by a rainy winter but with sparse snowfall. The spring was characterized by solid precipitation, above average compared with seasonal averages. The rain then became sparser during the summer months, leading up to the harvest, which commenced in mid-September, about one week earlier than the average harvests at Montoni, as the grapes reached an ideal ratio of sugar to acidity earlier than usual. During the winter and spring, the temperatures were moderate, however, during the summer months, cool nights offset the hot summer days, allowing for ample acidity to form in the grapes. The overall production was marked with a
slightly lower yield than the 2019 vintage but was steady compared to our annual averages. The quality of the grapes was high, and the resulting wines have vertical aromatics and are refined on the palate.

Reviews

  • Perricone del Core IGT Terre Siciliane — 2020 – Decanter – 91 Points

“Aromas of tobacco, dusty cherries and bay leaf mark this wine of depth and complexity. The palate is spicy, a true signature of the grape, as this wine was done almost entirely in concrete vessels. A touch of briny minerality lends itself to sea salt and dark chocolate flavours—a tightly wound core of black fruits draped in minerality and showing ample structure and ageability.”

  • Perricone del Core Sicilia DOC — 2020 – Wine Enthusiast – 91 Points

“Hints of firewood and camphor light up behind black cherries, vanilla, cedar and spices are on the nose, before fresher notes of tomatoes and herbs come out on the palate. An undercurrent of stony brininess and more berries come through at the back, with the tension held by mellowing tannins but vibrant acid.”
