Salmos, DOQ Priorat — 2020
-
Introduction
-
WINERY Familia Torres founded its first winery in Villafranca del Penedès in 1870, over 150 years ago, but its roots in the winegrowing traditions of Spain date back to the 16th century. Five generations have carried the family business forward, passing on their passion for wine culture from parents to children — a passion steeped in respect for land and tradition, and a firm belief in innovation. Today the family focuses on wines from unique vineyards and historical estates, as well as the recovery of ancestral varieties.
WINE Salmos originates in a beautiful, hidden land, in the rocky hills about 2 hours south of Barcelona and only 12 miles inland from the Mediterranean Sea. Not much exists in this area besides beautiful vistas, old vines making exceptional wines and extremely steep hillsides. The vineyards, planted on steep shale (llicorella slate) slopes, are subjected to significant variations in temperature between night and day. These natural challenges contribute to the allure of this wine. Salmos is a tribute to the monks of the Carthusian order who planted the first vines in Priorat in the 12th century. A wine that protects the mysterious heritage of ancient times and wise men. Salmos pays tribute to the two native varietals to the Priorat region and is a blend of solely Cariñena and Garnacha.

Vineyard Profile
-
Salmos is classified as “Vi de Vila” or wine of the village, as it is sourced solely from the subregion of Porrera. Porrera is one of the coldest, windiest and wettest of the Priorat subregions, known for producing round and concentrated reds that are “fresher” in quality. Soils in Porrera developed from carboniferous slate (Palaeozoic), characterized by their shallow depth, with rapid drainage and a low capacity for water retention. These soils on steep slopes are what give the region’s wines their typical identity.

The precipitation levels in the first half of the year surpassed the annual historical record. In contrast, the summer period was characterized by minimal rainfall, which subsequently exacerbated the decline in crop yields. Regarding temperature patterns, while the early spring exhibited colder conditions, the remainder of the year maintained relatively average temperatures.
