Valter Fissore, owner and winemaker of Elvio Cogno, commented that “2017 is to be considered a very good vintage. The Barolos are incredibly pleasant to drink: they are rich in crunchy red fruit, with an energetic mouthfeel, dominated by brilliant freshness and dense, but velvety tannins which result in an elegant and refined sip.”
Despite the vintage being characterized by hot and dry summer months, water reserves in the soil and September rain saved the vines from being stressed by water shortage. In addition, in early September, the temperature dropped, especially during night hours, creating ideal temperature differences between day and night. These factors, together with the excellent exposure of Elvio Cogno’s plots and the scrupulous practices adopted in the vineyard during the growing season, allowed the grapes to ripen well, achieving phenolic maturity before harvest.
Kerin O’Keefe of Wine Enthusiast awarded the 2017 Barolo Ravera 98 points and described the wine as, “showing an enviable combination of elegance and power, this stunning wine opens with aromas of wild berries, underbrush, dark spice and balsamic notes of cedar and new leather. The tense, savory palate is loaded with youthful energy, showing succulent Marasca cherry, raspberry, cinnamon and star anise framed in tightly knit, refined tannins and surprisingly bright acidity for the vintage.” (July 2021)
The 2017 Barolo Cascina Nuova, made from the younger vines in the Ravera, smells of red fruit and sweet spices, complemented by a refreshing blood orange note. On the palate, it shows a lively acidity and is perfectly balanced thanks to the silky and wraparound texture of its tannins.
