Val di Suga 2016: Winemaker Andrea Lonardi’s Vintage Notes
BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO The 2016 vintage at Val di Suga expresses a very classic nose, full of blood orange character. The palate is refined with silky and fully integrated tannins. The pale ruby color shows the vibrancy and energy of Val di Suga Brunello, which has always focused on elegance over richness and power.
VIGNA DEL LAGO, located in the north side of Montalcino, expresses the essence of the lighterand more feminine style of Brunello that results from continental weather and predominant clay soils. The wine shows pale ruby color with a nose of fresh orange complicated by hints of dried flowers. The palate is light with a mild palate, silky tannins and long-lasting finish.
POGGIO AL GRANCHIO is the south-east side of Montalcino and expresses the nature of “galestro”: shale soils. Due to the soil, the wine shows lower pH and higher acidity, with a high level of thick and firm tannins. Is the most age-worthy of the single vineyard Brunellos. On the nose it shows a combination of red and black fruits, with a distinctive leafy peach note and typical gamey character. The palate is firm and full of energy.
VIGNA SPUNTALI is one of the oldest Brunellos to be made with the concept of the single vineyard. Spuntali expresses the nature of the sandy soils and Mediterranean climate. Here Sangiovese ripens very well and reaches outstanding levels of generosity. On the nose it shows a combination of candied orange and spices with Mediterranean herbs (thyme-mint-rosemary). The palate shows supple fruitwrapped tannins with a creamy, long, savory texture.
Critics, too, are already gushing about the 2016 vintage of Brunello di Montalcino. Bruce Sanderson of Wine Spectator declares, “Brunello di Montalcino’s 2016 vintage is the best in a generation.” Kerin O’Keefe of Wine Enthusiast goes further, commenting, “…these wines are far superior to the 2015s…The 2016s are even better than the highly acclaimed 2010s.” We’re delighted to offer you these wines in our Fall Luxury Offering this September.
