Davies/Schramsberg Vineyards Releases Tête-de-Cuvée of Red Wine Program

ST. HELENA, CA (April 11, 2016) — This spring, Davies Vineyards, the sister winery of Schramsberg Vineyards, will release its maiden vintage of the J. Davies “Jamie” Cabernet Sauvignon, the finest red wine from its Diamond Mountain estate in Napa Valley. From the highly regarded 2012 harvest, the wine commemorates the family’s matriarch and co-founder Jamie Davies who, with her husband Jack, facilitated the rebirth of the historic property back in 1965.

“On behalf of my family and the entire team at Davies Vineyards, we are proud to present our first vintage of ‘Jamie,’” says second-generation vintner Hugh Davies. “This delicious wine is the result of 50 years of hard work in our family’s hillside vineyards and it reflects the ultimate expression of Cabernet Sauvignon from our vines.”

Schramsberg Vineyards, well-known for its pedigreed sparkling wine, also shines in its production of top-quality Cabernet Sauvignons and Pinot Noirs under the Davies Vineyards red wine program. With only 325 cases of the “Jamie” produced, the inaugural release is made from the best 12 barrels of estate wine crafted in 2012, and takes Davies Vineyards’ portfolio to the next level as a Napa Valley red wine producer.

The “Jamie” not only represents the finest expression of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon; it honors a woman who was a pioneer, one of the few female vintners of her time. Jamie and Jack Davies were the first in California to use Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for the base wines of their sparkling wine production employing the complex méthode traditionnelletechnique. The wine label bears Jamie’s signature in remembrance of her hard work and dedication to Schramsberg and the Napa Valley. Jamie passed away in 2008 and is survived by her three sons, Bill, John and Hugh.

In 1994, the Schramsberg team began experimenting with red varieties on the historic 41-acre Diamond Mountain location and, in 2001, the first J. Davies Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon was bottled. The 2012 growing season was an impeccable one for the Diamond Mountain District, and Hugh felt that this particular vintage was capable of producing the “crown jewel” of the estate Cabernet Sauvignon program and worthy of his mother’s name.

The winemaking was a team effort by Hugh Davies, senior winemaker Sean Thompson and consulting winemaker Celia Welch. The final blend was made from the best lots of wines from the property’s three vineyard sections — including two of the Napa Valley’s first hillside vineyards. The wine was aged in new French oak barrels for 28 months and in bottle for another 15 months.

Jamie Davies and the Cabernet Sauvignon that carries her signature are true icons of the Schramsberg estate, representing the winery’s commitment to the land and its continued craftsmanship of creating world-class sparkling and still wines.
