Early picks, low yields, always delicious

“Celebrating the first harvest of the season, Schramsberg brought in pinot noir grapes from the Carneros region on the earliest date in more than a decade,’ Hugh Davies said. The latest first pick for the winery was on Aug. 29, 2011, which is more than a month later in the season than this year’s harvest. ‘The fickle climate produced a smaller yield, and for some grapes an earlier harvest,’ said Sean Thompson, senior winemaker for Schramsberg and J. Davies labels. The harvest celebration was indoctrinated by sabering Schramsberg sparkling wine, and the crushing of pinot noir grapes picked from a hillside property in the Carneros region that Davies said is one of its earliest-ripening grapes.”
