Elvio Cogno: Wines of Emotion, Precision and Purity

ST. HELENA, CA (July 1, 2014) — Wilson Daniels, recognized as one of the industry’s premier wines and spirits sales and marketing firms, announces its exclusive importing partnership with award-winning (Piedmont producer) Elvio Cogno, located in the heart of Italy’s storied Barolo district.

The Cogno family has been making wine for four generations. In 1990, Elvio Cogno left his position with venerable Barolo producer Marcarini at La Morra, and bought a historical, 18th-century hilltop farmhouse at Bricco Ravera, near Novello, in the Langhe area of Piedmont. Elvio restored the manor, founded his own winery here, and devoted himself to the rich winemaking traditions handed down by his father and grandfather. He, in turn, has now passed the torch on to his daughter, Nadia, and her husband, Valter Fissore, who worked beside Elvio for nearly 30 years.

Today, co-owner and winemaker Valter oversees a total production of nearly 7,000 cases of 10 Elvio Cogno estate wines: four DOCG Barolos — Cascina Nuova, Ravera, Bricco Pernice and Vigna Elena; two DOC Barbera d’Albas — Bricco dei Merli and Pre-Phylloxera, and one DOCG Barbaresco Bordini, DOC Langhe Nebbiolo Montegrilli, DOC Langhe Nascetta di Novello Anas-Cetta, and DOC Dolcetto d’Alba. These wines are produced from 27 acres of family-owned vineyards on the meticulously groomed slopes that surround the elegant hilltop winery. Valter fashions wine in the traditional Cogno style, at the same time focusing on the health and sustainability of the vineyards. Elvio Cogno grapes are indigenous varieties, grown organically. Valter describes his wines as “precise and pure,” and says they are meant to evoke emotion and create memories.

The wines are consistently well-received, often with exceptional scores. Antonio Galloni, founder of Vinous Media states, “the truth is that all of the wines in the estate’s lineup are fabulous from top to bottom… Elvio Cogno (is) one of Barolo’s leading estates.” Elvio Cogno has been named “Winery of the Year” by Wine & Spirits Magazine for three of the past five years. Jancis Robinson characterizes the 2006 Vigna Elena Riserva as having “near perfect balance.” The Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner describes the wine as “truly stunning.” Elvio Cogno wines are of the highest caliber produced in Langhe, and they are well-known to critics both in Europe and the United States. The relationship between Wilson Daniels and Elvio Cogno marks the beginning of a new chapter for Elvio Cogno wines in the U.S., and promises an even greater audience for these seductive ambassadors from Barolo.

Elvio Cogno
Following in the footsteps of Elvio the maestro, Elvio Cogno winery continues to produce elegant wines without altering the traditions, styles and flavors the Langhe area conjures up through its quilted

landscape and unique grape varieties. Valter Fissore and Nadia Cogno cultivate indigenous varieties — Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto and Nascetta — that preserve the spirit of the family’s history. Organic and precise vineyard practices, low yields per hectare and respect for the land create complex wines that evoke as sense of place and passion.
