Napa Valley – 2013 Diary. Part 14

“The winery that is a partnership between Larry Hyde and Aubert de Villaine of DRC. So there we have wines that are made in a very different style from a lot of California wines especially the Syrah’s, they are picked earlier. It is a style that places a lot of importance of vibrancy, energy, focus and so those are beautiful wines. They also take a lot of time in the bottle to just really show but I like those wines quite a bit even though they are very different from what most people might think of as California Chardonnay. The Syrah’s I also liked there. They have a very kind of Pinot-type perfume and lightness to them. It is not a wild, or gainey Syrah but more of an aromatic Syrah. Starting in 2012 they are going to make some Pinot’s. Its always been a mystery to me as to why Hyde de Villaine doesn’t make Pinot Noir but I guess that is going to change pretty soon.”
