Schramsberg Vineyards 50th Anniversary Celebrates the Release of Rare Wines

ST. HELENA, CA (June 5, 2015) — In celebration of its 50th anniversary year, Schramsberg Vineyards proudly announces the upcoming release of five limited-edition wines. These rare offerings include the Davies Vineyards 2013 Jack and Jamie’s ReservePinot Noir and four Schramsberg late-disgorged (LD) sparkling wines: 1999 J. Schram LD, 2000 Reserve LD, 2004 Blanc de Blancs LD and 2004 Blanc de Noirs LD.

In the fall, the winery will be hosting a series of consumer wine dinners across the country, where selections of these 50th anniversary offerings will be featured. The winery will also be hosting multiple trade seminars showcasing newly released sparkling and still wines, as well as offer a retrospective tasting spanning 50 years (dates and locations for all events to be announced).

“It’s not every year that we can release a sparkling wine that has aged on the lees for 10, 14 or even 15 years, such as these late-disgorged bottles from our cellar,” says Hugh Davies, Schramsberg’s second generation vintner. “I love the savory, nutty and seasoned attributes that evolve with fruitful caramelization, density and creaminess on the palate. For the aged Schramsberg sparkling wine enthusiast out there, I truly believe these offerings are the finest we’ve ever produced.”

In 1965, the year Jack and Jamie Davies purchased the Schramsberg Vineyards property, the craft sparkling wine category came to life in California. Schramsberg was the first to create an ultra-premium, bottle-fermented sparkling wine in the United States, beginning with its flagship Blanc de Blancs in 1965. The winery also crafted the United States’ first tête de cuvée sparkling wine with extended tirage aging, introducing the 1987 J. Schram to the world in 1992.

Today, Schramsberg’s quality is rooted in its diverse vineyard sources, which span over 110 cool-climate vineyard blocks throughout the coastal pockets of Napa, Sonoma, Marin and Mendocino counties. From this range of vineyard sites, more than 250 base wines are created each year, for the careful blending of 12-14 different cuvées. Varied winemaking practices, including barrel fermentation, tank fermentation, malolactic fermentation, and extended barrel lot aging allow for greater depth of flavors and aromas in each of the finished wines. Refusing to rest on its laurels, Schramsberg continues to identify new vineyard sites each year, pushing the envelope in crafting world-class sparkling wines.

The 50thanniversary wines tell the history of Schramsberg Vineyards’ consistent desire for higher quality and greater diversity, and demonstrate what the Davies family has worked to achieve since the beginning: distinction, innovation, and longevity.
