SevenFifty Daily: Val di Suga

Renowned for helping to establish Brunello di Montalcino as one of the world’s most famous wines, Val di Suga is uniquely positioned in Tuscany’s Val d’Orcia as the only producer that possesses vineyards in all three of Montalcino’s viticultural regions

The three hillside locations of the Val di Suga vineyards are famous for possessing the best-suited terroirs for the highest-quality Brunello production. Each slope has different sun exposure and geologically distinct soils that lend a range of favorite tasting notes, including distinctive notes of ginger and quinine bark. An excellent pairing for game, roasted and grilled meats, and medium-aged cheeses, Val di Suga Brunello has stood the test of time as an ideal pairing for the beloved staples of regional Italian cuisine.

Val di Suga has 55 hectares of Sangiovese under vine. The terrain ranges from marl and clay to sandy limestone and creates an excellent grape-growing canvas for many of the desirable traits for which the Sangiovese grape is praised. The surrounding natural environment also has a favorable impact on the fruit. For example, the lakeside vicinity of the Vigna del Lago has a moderating effect on the vineyard’s microclimate.

The brand’s wines include Brunello Vigna del Lago DOCG, Brunello Vigna Spuntali DOCG, Poggio al Granchio DOCG, and Rosso di Montalcino DOC. The Vigna Spuntali benefits from 24 months of maturation in French oak and at least 24 months in the bottle. The Poggio al Granchio and Brunello Vigna del Lago are aged in casks for 30 months, and the Rosso di Montalcino matures for 15 months in Slovenian oak before spending an additional three months aging in bottle. By using a time-tested combination of traditional and modern vinification techniques, Val di Suga continues to establish itself as a top Brunello producer, winning over wine drinkers and collectors worldwide.

Owing to the particular refinement and renowned longevity of Val di Suga Brunello, these bottles are especially prized by collectors. Aging the wines unlocks layers of nuanced flavors that have earned Brunello the prestigious reputation it enjoys in the international wine market today.
