Castello di Volpaia
Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG – 2009

The Wine Advocate
88 points

“The 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva opens with an attractive, plump fruit, but then the French oak becomes dominant on the mid-palate. Flowers, sweet spices and licorice wrap around the finish.”

Vinsanto del Chianti Classico DOC – 2005

The Wine Advocate

“The 2005 Vinsanto del Chianti Classico is quite pretty. Honey, dried flowers, figs, orange marmalade and spices come together nicely in this medium-bodied, moderately sweet wine. A hint of white truffles develops on the long, creamy finish.”

"This well-defined dessert white boasts toffee, caramel, smoke and dried fig aromas and flavors. Stays persistent and balanced as the smoky element intensifies on the long, iodine- and treacle- infused aftertaste, with a powerful, expansive finish."

"Volpaia is the proud author of one of Chianti Classico’s most enjoyable dessert wines. This luscious Vin Santo... is velvety soft and decadent with lingering tones of orange zest, resin, dried ginger, candied fruit and a tiny hint of musk."

“Blueberry and blackberry flavors are married to a lean, wiry frame. Hints of flowers and mineral add dimension, and this closes down on the finish….”

“Very oaky, this red has a resinous quality overlaying its cherry and strawberry flavors. Tightly wound, this is rigid and tannic through the finish….”

“Restrained aromas of tight fruit, savoury notes, roses and leather. Elegant red fruit with Marmite notes on the palate, refreshing acidity and soft, yet high tannins. Quite backward at the moment but is classcical in style. Will last.”

“From the excellent 2001 vintage, this opulent and intense Vin Santo...reveals layers of honey, almond paste, dried apricot and butterscotch. There’s great complexity and elegance here and the wine would pair with an assortment of aged cheeses.”

“An attractive Vin Santo opens with integrated aromas of honey, candied chestnut, maple syrup, dried fruit and apricot. The 2003 vintage was a hot one, but this beautiful wine takes that heat and turns it into intensity. Finishes full and soft.”

Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG – 2007

The Wine Advocate
88 points

“The 2007 Chianti Classico Riserva shows quite a bit of warmth and spiciness in its dark red fruit. This is an attractive, mid-weight Chianti but the vintage doesn’t seem to have produced fruit with enough depth to stand up to the French oak, which overpowers the wine and contributes to the dry tannins. Overall, I expected more from the 2007 Riserva.”

Coltassala, Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG – 2007

The Wine Advocate
90 points

“The 2007 Chianti Classico Riserva Coltassala is much more successful than the straight Riserva. Here, too, the French oak is quite present, but there is more than enough fruit to balance the oak. There is also a vibrancy that keeps the fruit fresh, while clean, minerally notes punctuate the finish.”

"...a pretty, mid-weight offering informed by tobacco, flowers, herbs and cherries. As is often the case in cooler years, these high-altitude vineyards tend to yield a more ethereal style of wine. It is a model of restrained elegance."
