GAJA
Barbaresco DOP — 2020

Vinous
94

"The 2020 Barbaresco is a very young wine. In most years, the Gaja Barbaresco is quite showy, but the 2020 clearly needs time. There's terrific fruit intensity, but the aromatics aren't quite expressive. These days the Gaja wines have less oak imprint, which pushes the fruit forward, but also yields a wine that is a bit more austere in the early going."

Alteni di Brassica DOP — 2021

Vinous

"The 2021 Alteni di Brassica is a gorgeous, steely white endowed with tons of varietal character. This is the first vintage that includes fruit from the Gaja family's new vineyards in Alta Langa. Lemon peel, sage, mint, dried herbs, chamomile and a touch of tropical fruit linger on the bright, saline finish."

Sperss Barolo DOP — 2018

The Wine Advocate

“The 2018 Barolo Sperss is impossible to confuse with any other Barolo. The bouquet has a firm, etched quality with dark fruit, pencil shavings, iron and red brick. But there is also a fragrant interlude of wild cherry, forest fruit and orange peel.”

“Shows very nicely, with ripe aromas of plum, strawberry, grilled herb and chamomile flower. Give the wine time and it shows more herbal sensations and even a blast of mint that is characteristic of Cerequio, where the grapes are harvested.”

“Beautifully generous and round. The wine is redolent of tropical fruits, apricot, beeswax and crushed mineral. It shows good structure, and it also has a gentle side.”

“Shows tropical tones and sweet peach. It feels large and generous to the palate. Pretty mineral tones, even a hint of white pepper, add focus. The wine is not all nerves; there is creamy richness here.”

“The aromas are like a bouquet of pink roses. So perfumed. Citrus. It also has subtle and pure aromas of strawberries, cherries and stone. Full-bodied but agile and floating on the palate with firm and chewy tannins at the end that remain balanced and fresh. Needs five or six years to soften.”

“Lifted with rocky earth, graphite, cassis, violets, and wild herbs. Medium to full-bodied but restrained, it offers fine tannins, fresh acidity, and notes of black raspberry, red plum, and dusty earth. It is persistent and has wonderful length and gracefulness.”

“Depth, structure and complexity are the hallmarks of Nebbiolo, and this wine certainly delivers but also offers a juicy helping of fresh berry fruits. Barbaresco is the wine that launched the Gaja legacy in 1859. Aromatics of spiced orange peel, an assertive bouquet of dried purple florals and a touch of dried mint. The palate balances the savoury character of baking chocolate and fennel seed with an abundance of ripe red berry fruits—notes of strawberry and balsamic, raspberries and fresh mint and dried tobacco."

“Juicy and fleshy, evoking cherry, raspberry, floral and licorice flavors. Harmonious and open-knit, this is approachable now, yet should improve over the next five years. The firm, lingering finish picks up a mineral element.”

“This was also tasted from barrel and takes on more intensity in its aromatics of guava, grapefruit, and wet stone. Medium-bodied, with some salinity, this is an accessible wine for those who would like an introduction into the white wines of the Gaja estate. It has a linear feel, with rounded fruit on the mid-palate and a fresh spine of acidity.”

“Spicy and pure, it is full of red berries with Asian spice and white pepper. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, with elegance and refinement throughout, approachable and fine tannins, no harsh edges, and a long-lasting floral finish. This seem to be a vintage that will drink well early but have plenty of longevity as well.”
