Volpaia's Riserva is typically selected from the estate's highest parcels reaching 600 meters of elevation. As the hot 2017 vintage yielded small bunches and small berry with ripe skins but less ripe seeds, fermentation and maceration times were shortened for a gentler extraction. Indeed, this is quite soft with sweet, plump cherry buoyed by rather snappy acidity. Some dried floral nuances lend intrigue. Overall polished and polite but not for the long-haul. Puro' refers not just to the fact that this is made from 100% Sangiovese, but also that the vines represent 25 clones native to the area of Volpaia. The are grown in a small plot of the estate's south facing Casanova vineyard. Aged in 100% new French barriques, this leas with freshly ground coffee and sandalwood then reveals licorice, lavender and red cherry. The palate is sophisticated and smooth with fine svelte tannins and a racy core.

September rains and cool temperatures at harvest mitigated the hot, dry summer of 2016 here, allowing Volpaia to bring in a juicy Chianti Classico. Its red cherry flavors are concentrated enough to easily absorb the vanilla spice gained during its two years in new French oak barrels, the wine maintaining energy lift through the finish.

From 20-25 year old vines planted in the sandstone soils of Volpaia's Balifico vineyard, this marries sangiovese's bright red-cherry flavors with the dark, leafy tannins of cabernet sauvignon (35 percent of the blend). The wine aged in French oak barrels for 18 months, gaining subtle spice notes and pleasant savory tones.

Black-skinned berry, violet, new leather and tobacco aromas are front and center. Reflecting the nose, the smooth, approachable palate doles out juicy Marasca cherry, ripe plum, nutmeg and a hint of licorice framed in polished, pliant tannins. Drink through 2024.
