2017 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti: A Day’s Work

2017 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti: A Day’s Work

BY ANTONIO GALLONI | JULY 09, 2020 The annual presentation of new releases from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in early March was the last tasting I attended before lockdown. Initially I thought I would publish this article as a bookend, when things returned to normal. Back then, I could have never imagined where we would be today. After reading Neal Martin’s article Complex, Not Complicated: 2017 DRC in Bottle chronicling the London edition, I decided to shamelessly rip off his format. So, here you have my version… The complete lineup of 2017s from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. 6:00am: It’s Thursday...

Wine Spectator: Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2016: A Singular Vintage

Wine Spectator: Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2016: A Singular Vintage

"The 2016 vintage is very different, we really have no other year to compare it to," says Domaine de la Romanée-Conti co-director Aubert de Villaine, describing the new releases of Burgundy's most coveted Pinot Noirs. That was immediately obvious: Two of the estate's grand cru Pinot Noirs were missing from the annual tasting de Villaine presented in New York at Wine Spectator Grand Award winner Eleven Madison Park earlier this month. The vineyards of Echézeaux and Grands Echézeaux were devastated by the frost of April 27, 2016, which destroyed about 80 percent of the crop. The small remaining harvest was...

What Does The Best Wine In The World Taste Like?

What Does The Best Wine In The World Taste Like?

What does the best wine in the world taste like and how far would you go for a chance to taste it? Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Romanée-Contiis, without much debate, considered to be the best Pinot Noir, if not the best wine, in the world. And, the Domaine’s Co-Director and co-owner, Aubert de Villaine, is a living legend in the winemaking world. This is a wine that has seduced countless critics, sommeliers and collectors with its gentle majesty, silkiness and savory unctuosity. It is a wine that has been forged countless times and, at one point, held “hostage” by a vineyard...

Exclusive: Burgundy’s Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Leases Corton-Charlemagne Vineyard

Exclusive: Burgundy’s Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Leases Corton-Charlemagne Vineyard

Burgundy's hill of Corton is one of the most famed spots in wine. Now it is about to grow even more visible. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti has entered into a lease to farm an approximately 7-acre parcel of Corton-Charlemagne owned by Domaine Bonneau du Martray. Aubert de Villaine, codirector of DRC, told Wine Spectator that the lease will start in November 2018 and "our first harvest will be 2019." Armand de Maigret, manager of Bonneau du Martray, sought a partner to farm a small portion of his domaine's 27-acre parcel on the hill of Corton. He wanted a tenant who would share Bonneau du Martray's philosophy...

A Conversation With Aubert de Villaine

A Conversation With Aubert de Villaine

At 79 going on 80, Aubert de la Villaine, the director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC), which produces some of the world’s most expensive and rarest wines, is still going strong, running up and down cellar stairs like a teenager, just to keep ahead of schedule. In November, just after the annual Hospices de Beaune charity wine auction festivities, I sat down opposite de Villaine at the domaine’s headquarters in the small town of Vosne-Romanée to discuss a range of topics spanning de Villaine’s many years in the wine business, and reaching into the future as well. I found him friendly, very thoughtful,...

Visit Domaine de la Romanée-Conti – tasting of the 2016s from cask

Visit Domaine de la Romanée-Conti – tasting of the 2016s from cask

"On a rainy and cold day in Burgundy it’s nice to focus on something positive and invigorating … and what could be better that a visit at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti tasting the latest vintage – 2016 in this case. "The tasting this year was conducted by Alexandre Bernier, who also was in charge of the tasting when I first visited Domaine de la Romanée-Conti around five years earlier – back then to taste the 2011s from cask. "Well five years has passed, and while i’m still equally impressed and somewhat lost for words when I enter the cellars of...

Essays in Chardonnay: J. F. Coche-Dury & Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

Essays in Chardonnay: J. F. Coche-Dury & Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

“All too often, white wines are relegated to second-tier status, a sort of warm up for the reds that inevitably follow during most meals. I have long believed that white wines deserve a little more respect than that. Over the years, many of the most riveting experiences I have had have been with aged white wines. … Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet “Domaine de la Romanée-Conti owns three parcels in the Le Montrachet lieu-dit in Chassagne-Montrachet. The total surface area of the domaine’s holdings here is just 0.68 hectares, making Montrachet the smallest, and in many ways, hardest to find,...

de Villaine priming nephew to take over DRC

de Villaine priming nephew to take over DRC

"Speaking to db during the 2013 trade tasting of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti at Corney & Barrow’s London offices today, de Villaine said: "'I’m still kicking as the Americans say, but I’m training up my nephew, Bertrand de Villaine, who I hope will be able to take my place in a few years.' "With a case of Romanée-Conti 1990 recently selling for HK$1.5m at auction in Hong Kong, de Villaine admitted that the 'extravagant' prices his wines sell for 'bothers' him. "'It bothers me a lot that my wines are traded as a commodity and not enjoyed by wine lovers. It doesn’t...

DRC’s Competitive Advantage

DRC’s Competitive Advantage

"Despite a challenging vintage, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti's 2013s reflect both pedigree and terroir. "It often happens in Burgundy chat the most beautiful wines are the product of difficult births. The 2013 vintage presented vintners with a host of difficulties, from poor flowering and weather conditions to hail and fungal diseases. Yet the terroir specific to Burgundy's vines, especially the Pinot Noir, reconciled an uneasy relationship in the end, resulting in the kind of reds the region excels in-wines born more of light than heat. "It was with this storyline in mind that Aubert de Villaine, co-director of DRC, presented...

2014 Burgundy Tastings: Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

2014 Burgundy Tastings: Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

"Domaine de la Romanée-Conti's Aubert de Villaine described Burgundy's challenging growing season in 2014 as 'a play divided into three acts,' and it resulted in an excellent range of reds. "Always one of my most anticipated visits during my trips to Burgundy, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is one of those cellars where you feel the presence of something special. Much of its holdings lie just outside its imposing gate. "De Villaine is a wonderful host, having codirected the domaine since 1972. He knows the vineyards and the wines thoroughly, and his comments provide great insight into both the vintage and the individual...
