So when the coronavirus pandemic caused American governors and mayors in early March to shut down restaurant dining rooms as a public health precaution, many owners declared it was doubtful they would ever open again. That prophecy has resonated with the country’s smaller importers and...

Despite Headwinds, Imported Wine Players See Opportunity

Despite Headwinds, Imported Wine Players See Opportunity

DESPITE THE CHALLENGES FACING THE imported wine market—including tariffs and the outbreak of Covid-19—a number of brands that have built a strong following among U.S. consumers continue to post notable gains. Overall, bottled table wine imports in the U.S. declined slightly to 76.8 million nine-liter cases last year on a 630,000-case decrease, down from 2017’s high of just over 79 million cases, according to Impact Databank. The value of imported table wine to the U.S. slipped 1.7% to about $4.3 billion, roughly on par with 2017 values. These Virtual Wine Tastings Come With a Crate of Wine and Sense of Community

These Virtual Wine Tastings Come With a Crate of Wine and Sense of Community

by Noah Kaufman April 30, 2020 Wineries will ship you everything you need (aka lots of bottles). As the United States and countries around the world continue to apply social distancing measures during the coronavirus outbreak, images of empty streets in major cities and stories of restaurants and bars upending—and in some cases shutting down—have proliferated. But the pandemic's impact extends well outside the borders of major metropolises, into more rural areas of states with major outbreaks like California and New York. Statewide shelter-in-place mandates have meant that life and work in rural wine countries have changed dramatically. With the...

By Brian Freedman  Updated April 28, 2020 TERLATO WINES / TENUTA LUCE / FRESCOBALDI TOSCANA / LE CHIUSE / CASTIGLION DEL BOSCO Brunello di Montalcino is one of Italy’s most revered wines, and arguably represents the apex of what the Sangiovese grape is capable of. While consumers and critics often seem eternally destined to debate the relative merits of a more traditional style versus a more modern one, it’s impossible to argue that today's Brunellos represent a seriously delicious selection of wines, no matter how they’re...

‘Drink small to save little wineries’

‘Drink small to save little wineries’

Nicole Sierra-Rolet of Chêne Bleu (below) argues that small is beautiful, but endangered, and puts in a plea for us to ‘drink small to save little wineries’. As the principal of our family winery in the Rhône Valley, I’ve spent lots of time, like many lately, in front of the Zoom camera, diligently participating in all those helpful pop-up programmes and learning to host virtual tastings. [See Richard’s guide to some of the best – JR] But behind the camera I can’t take my eye off the tsunami of red ink heading straight for the income statements of wineries like ours. As a...

The Sommelier Diaries: We Will Weather the Storm

The Sommelier Diaries: We Will Weather the Storm

Alexandra Schrecengost Many of us at Wilson Daniels — myself very much included — are negotiating the intricacies of working from home while homeschooling kids. Leading Wholesalers Adapt As Coronavirus Crisis Takes Hold

THE U.S. DRINKS INDUSTRY—LIKE MOST other industries throughout the world—was adapting to a rapidly shifting landscape at press time, as suppliers, wholesalers, and retailers rushed to adjust their operations to meet the new realities ushered in by the global coronavirus pandemic. With the outbreak of coronavirus exploding in the U.S. in mid-March, on-premise operations effectively shut down across much of the country, while the off-premise initially saw a significant increase in sales as consumers stocked up, preparing for what could be a lengthy period of confinement. While the next few months will be challenging to say the least, the market’s...
