How a Tiny Italian Resort is Reviving Venetian Viticultere – Featuring Venissa

How a Tiny Italian Resort is Reviving Venetian Viticultere – Featuring Venissa

Venissa’s small outturn has made it a sought-after wine among oenophiles. If you were looking for an agreeable location to establish a vineyard, you could do a whole lot better than the string of marshy islands that make up Italy’s Venetian lagoon. Never mind the shortage of available real estate and a waterborne logistics economy that makes almost everything more expensive than it is on the mainland. Venice and the islands surrounding it make up what could be the world’s most romantic chronic flood zones, an area routinely inundated by the lagoon’s brackish water during acqua alta, or periods of...

Newsweek: American-Made Sparkling Wine as Rich in History as it is in Taste–Meet Schramsberg Vineyards

Newsweek: American-Made Sparkling Wine as Rich in History as it is in Taste–Meet Schramsberg Vineyards

"The rolling hills of Napa Valley drenched in vibrant shades of green and mustard spill across the vast openness, dotted with happy little trees along the winding roads to Schramsberg vineyards. Colorful flowers line enchanting streams and ponds, while the rows and rows of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines seem endless. The sight is utterly breathtaking, like the living, thriving splendor of a Bob Ross scenescape. It’s no wonder the sparkling wine produced on Schramsberg’s 66 properties across the Northern Californian coast is equally enthralling. The beauty of the land the vineyards occupy is noticeable in every glass of Blanc de...

Opening a Bottle: Tasting Dal Forno Romano at Harvest

Opening a Bottle: Tasting Dal Forno Romano at Harvest

"Are these wines too perfect?” Kevin Day contemplates this question as he recounts his visit and tasting with Dal Forno Romano during the 2018 harvest. We invite you to visit Opening a Bottle to read the full article, view Kevin's beautiful photos and watch his video (also embedded below). "This Valpolicella estate swaggers in many people’s standings of “Italy’s Greatest Winery,” often spoken of in the same, superlative-laden sentences as Gaja, Giacomo Conterno, Biondi-Santi and Giuseppe Quintarelli." "Each wine exuded an elegance that was fierce yet calm, like a cat about to strike. The fruit tones were precise, exuding tightly...

Wine Spectator: Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2016: A Singular Vintage

Wine Spectator: Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2016: A Singular Vintage

"The 2016 vintage is very different, we really have no other year to compare it to," says Domaine de la Romanée-Conti co-director Aubert de Villaine, describing the new releases of Burgundy's most coveted Pinot Noirs. That was immediately obvious: Two of the estate's grand cru Pinot Noirs were missing from the annual tasting de Villaine presented in New York at Wine Spectator Grand Award winner Eleven Madison Park earlier this month. The vineyards of Echézeaux and Grands Echézeaux were devastated by the frost of April 27, 2016, which destroyed about 80 percent of the crop. The small remaining harvest was...

Netflix and Sip: Best Wines to Pair with Your Favorite TV Shows – Featuring Royal Tokaji

Finding a wine that represents the real good place is a mighty tall order, but the Royal Tokaji Wine Company 2008 Essencia ($40,000/1.5-liter) comes pretty close. As one of only 18 large format bottles released by the Hungarian company, the “delicious sweet wine” decked out in exquisite decanters are described by many as ‘heavenly.’” Half bottles are available for $696.

Hungary’s Royal Tokaji Releases the World’s Most Expensive Wine–at $40,000 per Decanter

Hungary’s Royal Tokaji Releases the World’s Most Expensive Wine–at $40,000 per Decanter

Essencia, like Hungary’s more well-known Tokaji Aszú, is made from grapes that have developed noble rot (known as Aszú berries). But Essencia is sweeter, syrupy, with little alcohol (4% at most), produced in a lengthy process from berries crushed from their own weight instead of pressed. The 18 1.5-liter decanters being released by Royal Tokaji, each made with some 400 pounds of hand-picked grapes, are also bottled by hand. James Carcass, a Hungarian-based artist has created the decanters, inspired by the Essencia slowly dripping from the individually picked Aszú berries, according to Charlie Mount, managing director at Royal Tokaji. “Each...

Fortune: The World’s Most Expensive Wine is From Hungary

Fortune: The World’s Most Expensive Wine is From Hungary

"A newly-released $40,000 bottle of 2008-vintage wine now ranks among the most expensive wines in the world at release." Fortune Magazine's Clay Dillow goes in-depth about the extreme efforts to create a single bottle of Royal Tokaji's 2008 Essencia of which only 18 magnumns were produced. "The high price of this special release bottle stems from both cost of production and scarcity. To produce a single magnum of the sweet, syrupy Essencia that Hungarian winemaker Royal Tokaji is now marketing for €35,000 a pop can require more than 400 pounds of grapes, not to mention a lengthy maturation. Each grape...

Forbes: An Italian Cinderella Wine Story: Elvio Cogno and Barolo’s Ravera Cru

Forbes: An Italian Cinderella Wine Story: Elvio Cogno and Barolo’s Ravera Cru

In 1990, fourth generation winemaker Elvio Cogno bought a historic 18th-century farmhouse and vineyard situated at the top of Bricco Ravera, a hill near Novello—a quiet village in Italy’s Piedmont region. It was a humble, largely unnoticed beginning to what has become one of the most respected winemaking operations in the Ravera Cru of Piedmont. Cogno, who was born in Novello, understood the neglected potential of the Ravera vineyards and spent the past decades developing vineyard sites he felt had untapped potential. Now, 29 years later his son-in-law Valter Fissore, who worked along with Cogno for 25 years, continues to...

Forbes: A Tour of Barolo – Featuring Elvio Cogno

Valter Fissore produces several beautifully crafted offerings of Barolo from the Ravera vineyard in the commune of Novello. His "Vigna Elena" riserva, made entirely from the rosé clone of Nebbiolo, offers remarkable finesse and lightness; it is a stunning wine. Several other producers also offer a Barolo from the Ravera vineyard, including Vietti and Paolo Scavino. The floral notes and charm of this site are apparent in these wines; Ravera today is rightfully acclaimed as one of the most important MGA in the entire zone.
