Royal Tokaji: 2017 Latest Releases

Royal Tokaji: 2017 Latest Releases

BY NEAL MARTIN | SEPTEMBER 14, 2021 Tokaji is one of Hungary’s greatest gifts to the world. Such is its importance to Hungarians that it’s even mentioned in “Himnusz,” their national anthem, which has lyrics translating as: “Let nectar’s silver rain ripen the grapes of Tokaji soon.” (That’s like “God Save the Queen” namechecking a pint of ale. Or maybe it does in one of the later verses that nobody remembers?) I was recently sent the latest release, the 2017 vintage, from the Royal Tokaji Company, and I arranged a Zoom tasting with winery director Zoltán Kovács, who joined the company in...

Why Volcanic Wines Are Erupting in Popularity Right Now

Interest in these mountainous wines is sky-high. BY MIKE DESIMONE, JEFF JENSSEN TOKAJ-HEGYALJA, HUNGARY Royal Tokaji   VOLCANO: Szt. Tamás, part of the Telkibânya Volcanic Dome Field WHAT TO KNOW: Much of Hungary’s surface is volcanic, and underground hot springs abound. The Telkibânya Volcanic Dome Field, which straddles the Slovakian border in the northeast, is responsible for the iron-rich soils in the country’s most renowned region, Tokaj-Hegyalja, the birthplace of sweet Tokaji wines and dry Furmint. ONE TO TRY: Royal Tokaji Szt. Tamás Single Vineyard 6 Puttonyos Aszu First Growth 2013 ($136) The Szt. Tamás hill is one of over 400 volcanoes that dot the region. This...

Wine Legend: Royal Tokaji, Nyulászó Aszu 6 Puttonyos 1993

A vintage that has stood the test of time...  Stephen Brook November 8, 2020 Wine Legend: Royal Tokaji, Nyulászó Aszu 6 Puttonyos 1993, Tokaj, Hungary Bottles produced 12,007 Composition Furmint-Hárslevelű Yield 0.5hl/ha Alcohol 10.7% Release price $77 Price today £234/50cl A legend because… After decades of Communist state monopoly, the Hungarian wine industry underwent gradual privatisation after 1990. Royal Tokaji was one of the very first to benefit from international investment. Initial vintages of that decade were not exceptional, but ideal conditions in 1993 allowed new producers to make Tokaji of high quality. Although vintages of the early 1990s have not aged particularly well, 1993 has...

Forbes: Royal Tokaji: Rediscovering The Wine That Communism Left Behind

Forbes: Royal Tokaji: Rediscovering The Wine That Communism Left Behind

One of the world’s most legendary and beautiful wines, Tokaji Aszú from Hungary’s Tokaj region, was born of violence. It was a volcanic violence, a rough beginning, as upwards of 400 individual volcanoes erupted on the edge of the Hungarian plain spewing a breathtaking array of mineral ash onto what are now the vineyards of Tokaj. The volcanic debris left behind a happy inheritance for Tokaj, becoming an essential aspect of the terroir. Yet, the rubble of two World Wars and decades of communism left a far more negative legacy—one that the Tokaj region and wineries like Royal Tokaji are slowly...

Netflix and Sip: Best Wines to Pair with Your Favorite TV Shows – Featuring Royal Tokaji

Finding a wine that represents the real good place is a mighty tall order, but the Royal Tokaji Wine Company 2008 Essencia ($40,000/1.5-liter) comes pretty close. Hungary’s Royal Tokaji Releases the World’s Most Expensive Wine–at $40,000 per Decanter

Hungary’s Royal Tokaji Releases the World’s Most Expensive Wine–at $40,000 per Decanter

Essencia, like Hungary’s more well-known Tokaji Aszú, is made from grapes that have developed noble rot (known as Aszú berries). But Essencia is sweeter, syrupy, with little alcohol (4% at most), produced in a lengthy process from berries crushed from their own weight instead of pressed. The 18 1.5-liter decanters being released by Royal Tokaji, each made with some 400 pounds of hand-picked grapes, are also bottled by hand. James Carcass, a Hungarian-based artist has created the decanters, inspired by the Essencia slowly dripping from the individually picked Aszú berries, according to Charlie Mount, managing director at Royal Tokaji. “Each...
