  • Introduction

    • The name Belle Cousine is a reference to Pamela Fairbanks de Villaine, Larry Hyde’s lovely cousin who is the wife of Aubert de Villaine of Burgundy. It is Pamela who brings these visionary viticultural families from Burgundy and the Carneros region of Napa Valley together to make wines that express the character of place, with that rare minerality so dear to the Burgundian palate.

  • Vineyard Profile

    • Vineyards: Hyde Vineyard, at the eastern edge of Los Carneros District
    • Appellation: Los Carneros, Napa Valley
    • Size: 2.3 acres
    • Vine Age: 19 to 35 years
    • Soil: Haire Clay Loam
    • Exposure: South by southwest
  • Vintage Report

    • February saw abundant rains, followed by lots of filtered light in spring and early summer. Both bud break and flowering occurred a bit late, but under ideal weather conditions, creating a plentiful and even fruit set. Summer brought generous sun during the day and
cooler marine influences, virtually uninterrupted by major heat spikes. The relatively mild summer followed by extended fall sunshine and moderate heat created near-ideal conditions for the fruit to accumulate flavor complexity with gradual increases in sugar levels.

    • Harvest Date(s): September 29 (Merlot); October 7 (Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • Vinification

    • Barrel Aging: 25% new French oak
    • Bottled: May 4, 2021; unfined and unfiltered
  • Technical Information

    • Varietal Composition: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot
    • Alcohol: 14.4%
  • Tasting Notes

    • Notes of black cherry and rich currant lead into aromas of dried rose petal and graphite. Hints of holiday spices and sweet basil round out the smooth, elegant finish in the palate. Sophisticated and rich, the weight of the wines is full, yet extremely approachable in its youth.

  • Belle Cousine, Hyde Vineyard, Napa Valley — 2019 – Vinous – 95 Points

“Bright and focused, the 2019 bristles with energy. Strong Cabernet inflections give this mid-weight red tons of aromatic presence to match its mid-weight personality. Dark red/blue fruits, mint, blood orange, spice, leather and mocha are some of the notes that emerge over time. Like all the best wines here, the Belle Cousine offers outstanding focus, clarity and freshness.”
