  • Introduction

    • The 2006 Riserva was produced with our proprietary clone of Sangiovese Grosso called BBS11, which was identified and selected by Biondi-Santi at Tenuta Greppo. For this Riserva we exclusively used grapes from the oldest vines with over 25 years of age. This vintage comes from “La Storica,” the winery’s Riserva Library and has been re-released in 2019.

  • Vineyard Profile

    • Grape Source: 100% estate vineyards
    • Vine Age: 25 years or older
  • Vintage Report

    • The period from April to June was characterized by persistent rainfalls that favoured an important deposit of water in the soil, a useful reserve during the summer. The month of July was very hot and dry while the temperatures of August were slightly below average and the first part of September was warm and dry. The vines were able to develop their vegetative cycle in a regular manner without problems, benefiting from the last 2 warm weeks of September to achieve a perfectly balanced ripeness. Harvest began on September 18th.

  • Vinification

    • The grapes were healthy, ripe and rich in color with thick skins. The must was rich in sugar, extracts and acidity.

    • Fermentation: Slavonian oak barrels using indigenous yeast
    • Aging: 36 months in Slavonian oak, followed by 2 years in bottle
  • Technical Information

    • Varietal Composition: 100% Sangiovese Grosso (BBS11 Clone)
  • Tasting Notes

    • With a bright ruby red color this Riserva cleverly combines its impressive structure, characteristic of the 2006 vintage, and the lively acidity typical of Biondi-Santi, in a wine with great finesse and depth. The fruity notes are still fresh and well developed, underlined by balsamic hints and light floral sensations reminiscent of the vineyard in spring. It is well-balanced on the palate, sphere-shaped, soft and enveloping, leading us to a long-lingering, elegant, mineral aftertaste.

  • Biondi-Santi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva – 2006 – Decanter – 96 Points

As Biondi-Santi is holding back their 2012 Riserva for another year, the estate is instead re-releasing two older Riservas from diverse vintages. The 2006 is the more muscular expression, hailing from a particularly warm, dry year. Almost 13 years after harvest, this is still closed and takes time for some cellar scents to blow off. It combines base notes of dark, wet earth with more lifted orange zest and wild strawberries...
