GAJA
Darmagi Langhe DOP
It was Giovanni Gaja, Angelo’s father, who involuntarily named this wine, because when Cabernet Sauvignon was planted instead of Nebbiolo, his first comment in Piedmontese dialect was Darmagi! (What a pity!).
Planted in 1978 in the heart of Barbaresco village, Darmagi demonstrates the Langhe’s capacity to produce a fine wine from an international variety. Excellent sun exposure with a balance of clay and silt that creates optimal soil drainage.

Intense cassis and blueberries on the nose with hints of forest notes, such as tree bark, a trace of iodine rounded by sweet wood aromas. Soft tannins with nice acidity. In the mouth, it is smooth and velvety, elegant.

"Tasted blind alongside the Ca'Marcanda reds in this report, the 2023 Darmagi was the most austere in terms of structure in the blind flight and also poured the deepest hue, with an inky red/purple color. In the glass, it offers layered aromatics of boysenberry, red apple, mocha, mint, and piney alpine herbs. Full-bodied, it has significant structure, with a tightly wound profile, firm tannins, and a savory, herbal depth, along with a mouthwatering saline lift that carries through the finish. While equally impressive in its own right, it is the most reserved of the group at this stage and will require the most patience to unwind."
