Vintage Factsheets
Estate Syrah was harvested from Te Mata Estate’s own vineyards in Hawke’s Bay’s Dartmoor Valley, Bridge Pa Triangle and Gimblett Gravels sub-regions.
Woodthorpe Terraces is Te Mata Estate's vineyard in the Dartmoor Valley and is nestled between sheltering hills on elevated, free-draining, north-facing terraces. The soils, which were left behind as the Tutaekuri River eroded its path through the hills to the sea, are mainly alluvial stone, clay and sandy loam. Vineyard planting on this site began in 1994 and today Woodthorpe Terraces has 75 hectares under vine. Woodthorpe Terraces has the estate’s largest plantings of Syrah.
The Bridge Pa Triangle has summer temperatures that are among the hottest in Hawke’s Bay. This long, dry heat, combined with free-draining silt loam over a red, mineral gravel base, make this a superb site for ripening red varietals.
The Te Mata team was one of the first to recognize the potential of the Gimblett Gravels sub-region for grape growing, an area where stony soils from the old Ngaruroro River were exposed after a flood in the 1860s. Today, the Gimblett Gravels has gained an international reputation for the complexity, depth and detail of its red wines.

- The individual parcels of syrah from each plot were destemmed for fermentation and remained on skins for extended maceration before pressing. It was then run off to a mixture of new and seasoned French oak barrels for 12 months’ maturation, during which time it was regularly topped and racked. The wine received a traditional egg white fining before bottling.

A brilliant deep red with a vibrant purple edge, the Estate Vineyards Syrah immediately opens with ripe raspberry and red cherry appeal. The red fruit aromas – defined against subtle spices of white pepper, vanilla and cinnamon, and complexing notes of Turkish Delight and dark chocolate – adorn this wine with its signature floral quality, as well as vibrance and balance that run all the way through to its long finish.

"This red's tannins are firm and rustic, with wonderful concentration to the black tea–infused notes of berries, cherries, plums, cardamom and bittersweet chocolate. Shows a hint of violets on the finish."
