  • Introduction

    • First Chardonnay planted in Piemonte and first Italian white wined aged in barriques, Gaia & Rey was named by Angelo after his first daughter, Gaia, and grandmother Clotilde Rey.

  • Vineyard Profile

    • Treiso and Serralunga

    • Appellation: Langhe D.O.P.
    • First Year of Production: 1983
  • Vintage Report

    • 2020 has been characterized by frequent rainfalls that for various reasons can be defined as atypical. Rains were overall above average (the total annual average has been of 1000 mm in the Barolo area and 900 mm in the Barbaresco area compared to the usual 800mm). The distribution instead of being in winter and spring, was concentrated in the summer months; and surprisingly, despite the very frequent summer thunderstorms, for the first time in many years none of our vineyards were damaged by hail. Most of the winter rains fell in November (there was also an early snowfall on the 15th) and helped counteract the drought from December to March. During the course of winter the temperatures were mild, in particular January 2020 will be remembered for being the warmest in the last 50 years. The actual cold, with temperatures below freezing, arrived in mid-March and last a month, however no frost damage occurred. With the sole exceptions of a heat peak in late May, one in August and one in mid-September, the period from May to early October was characterized by an alternation of warm days, thunderstorms and following cooler days. The harvest of the white grapes started on August 26thand was longer than usual due to some rainfall that prolonged the final ripeness of each vineyard.

  • Technical Information

  • Tasting Notes

    • Refined and very floral on the nose, with a shiny straw yellow color. The nose opens up citrus and honeyed, followed by white peach and cantaloupe notes. It is creamy and voluptuous on the palate. 2020 Gaia & Rey is a moving wine, with a vibrant freshness and lingering finish with a quality of sapidity. It shows remarkable elegance.

  • Gaia Rey Langhe DOP — 2020 – Wine Enthusiast – 95 Points

“This continues to set the standard of Chardonnay in the Langhe. Reserved at first, the wine opens with white floral aromas mixed with ripe orchard fruits that evolve into nutty and chalky mineral notes. The palate is well balanced with vibrant acidity that keeps the wine lively with each sip.”

  • Gaia Rey Langhe DOP — 2020 – Wine Advocate – 95 Points

“Beautifully generous and round. The wine is redolent of tropical fruits, apricot, beeswax and crushed mineral. It shows good structure, and it also has a gentle side.”

  • Gaia Rey Langhe DOP — 2020 – 93 Points

"The 2020 Gaia & Rey is a classy, super-elegant wine. Orchard fruit, tangerine oil, white flowers and a touch of spice all run through this silky, polished Chardonnay from Gaja."
