Castello di Volpaia
Il Puro Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG
“Il Puro” (The Pure) it’s pure indigenous Sangiovese from the vineyard of Casanova, located at 1470 feet above the sea level, on the South facing slope of Volpaia between the celebrated vineyards of Coltassala and Balifico. Here we organically grow 25 clones of Sangiovese indigenous of Volpaia and reproduced from over 60 years old vines to preserve the local genetic diversity.
The Casanova vineyard, planted in 2001, is home to 25 indigenous Sangiovese clones, carefully selected to enhance the unique expression of the grape in this specific terroir. The vineyard is situated at an elevation of 480 meters (1,575 feet) with a south-southeast exposure, ensuring optimal sunlight throughout the growing season. The soil is rich in sandstone, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the minerality and complexity of the wine. With a vine density of 5,435 vines per hectare (2,200 vines per acre), the vineyard is carefully managed to allow for balanced growth and concentrated fruit. The vines are trained using the Guyot method, ensuring proper airflow and sunlight exposure, which helps to produce grapes with exceptional ripeness and quality

2020
"The 2020 is coy to begin with. It flits with mocha, grilled oily herbs and dusty earth. Full and velvety, the palate offers brambly forest berries that pop with pleasantly tart acidity. Oak notes are well incorporated, and it's a neat and polished package, maintaining everything in its place. Resolute, slightly austere tannins take hold on the finish."
