Compelling aromas of fragrant blue flower, red berry, crushed herb, new leather and tilled earth shape the nose. On the savory, full-bodied palate, taut, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity frame flavors of ripe Marasca cherry, raspberry compote, licorice and tobacco. It’s young but already boasts a fantastic combination of elegance and structure. Drink 2022–2030.

Pure cherry and strawberry fruit graces this delicate Barolo. Elements of licorice, tar and mineral add complexity and there is adequate structure. Still, this should be approachable early for the light weight and balance. Best from 2021 through 2036.

Novello. Lustrous and healthy mid ruby. Gorgeous, cool nose of red fruit, herbs and raspberry and with a fine layer of spice underneath. Iron and orange-peel hints. Very complete on the nose. Very serious palate of liquorice and cherry and bags of tannins. Finely tuned balance and just too youthful. Very long and a little austere, and with gripping tannins. Big, big struct

Novello. Deep ruby with orange tinges. Deeper and a little richer on the nose than the 2013 Cascina Nuova. Beautiful depth with spice notes. Huge structure, yet polished and fine. This will need plenty of time. (WS)

The 2017 Dolcetto d'Alba Mandorlo is a generous, luscious, sweet and fruit-forward wine. It is teeming with ripe blackberry and sweet spice, yet there is also a very attractive tone of new leather, like when you buy a new pair of designer shoes. It should be noted that this wine only sees stainless steel, so those savory flavors come from the grape itself...

The 2017 Langhe Nascetta del Comune di Novello Anas-Cëtta is fermented and aged on the lees in stainless steel. The creaminess you taste here comes thanks to the natural characteristics of the grape and that 180-day sur lie aging. This is a fresh, lean- to medium-bodied white with pretty aromas of stone fruit, melon and Golden Delicious apple.
