It's full-bodied but elegantly structured, delivering delicious flavors of ripe red cherry, blood orange, licorice and baking spice. "A lovely expression of Barolo riserva with just the right balance of fruit and riserva oak, which is quite rare in this category. Ripe, lightly spiced red-fruit character on the nose, which expands into a myriad of extra nuances if you linger, including truffle, ash, dried citrus peel and pressed flowers. Full-bodied with nicely integrated tannins that encourage the fruit character all the way through the long finish. Enduring, bright and cool character at the end. So well constructed, making the best of a great vintage. So good to taste now, but a there’s a long life ahead of this"

The 2018 Barbera d'Alba Bricco dei Merli is plush, dark and voluptuous yet mid-weight, which is typical of the variety. Dark cherry, plums, chocolate and mocha notes waft up from the glass in this soft easy-going but very nicely done Barbera.

The 2019 Anas-Cëtta is delicate and understated in the glass. Lemon peel, white flowers, tangerine oil and mineral undertones all grace this subtle, nuanced white from Cogno. In 2019, the Anas-Cëtta is especially delicate.

A tightly wound, linear red, this reveals steeped cherry and plum flavors, with shadings of tar, eucalyptus and licorice. The dense matrix of tannins rules the finish, yet this shows nice equilibrium overall.

This wine is a sure bet from Elvio Cogno and such a steal. The 2017 Barolo Cascina Nuova delivers ample intensity and power. In this regard, it keeps faithfully in line with the expectations of a hot vintage that rendered more concentrated and sweeter fruit. However, the expert winemaking team at this estate has been able to manage any excesses or hints of over-ripeness.

Intense, searing tannins Sweet red fruit, white pepper, mint, and tobacco come together in a wine that is not quite as refined as usually. This is one of the most tightly wound, classically austere Barolos readers will find in 2015, at least today. The searing tannins need time to soften, which will in turn allow the fruit to emerge more fully.
