Toast the Season with the Best Bubblies for $25 or Less

Toast the Season with the Best Bubblies for $25 or Less

“The holidays are high time for raising a glass of Champagne … and often. From office parties and family get-togethers to ringing in the new year with your best girlfriends, the champs runneth over. But, all that toasting can get expensive. “‘Champagne is like the perfect apartment in the West Village in Manhattan, the Gold Coast in Chicago, or the Pacific Heights in San Francisco,’ says Belinda Chang, James Beard Award-winning Wine Director of Maple & Ash in Chicago. ‘Because Champagne can only be made in the Champagne region of France and the real estate there is truly blue chip,...

The Best Champagne Bottle You Can Buy, According to 40 Experts

The Best Champagne Bottle You Can Buy, According to 40 Experts

“Our tip for Champagne? Ask and ye shall receive. “We sent out a simple missive to our favorite food and beverage pals a few weeks back: What Champagne are you drinking — or would you recommend drinking — on New Year’s Eve, and why? “The responses? A veritable deluge of bubblies. And diverse, both in style and price point. You’ll see $15 bottles in our list, and some in the high three- and four-figure range. And some of our experts went to different sippers: sparkling wines from New Mexico, Spain and Austria all make an appearance. We even have a...

The historical heart of Prosecco

The historical heart of Prosecco

"Given the huge – and growing – popularity of Prosecco, it’s a good bet that a lot of that Italian fizz will be uncorked during the holidays, especially on New Year’s Eve. A lot of it will be from the broad Prosecco DOC production zone. Most of that wine is inexpensive, sure, but for not that much more money, you can buy a Prosecco Superiore from the smaller heart of Prosecco, the Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG area. "The Conegliano Valdobbiadene zone is a stunning landscape of hillside vineyards in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy. The area is wedged between the...

Beyond the Bubbles: Insider’s Look at Schramsberg

Beyond the Bubbles: Insider’s Look at Schramsberg

“Schramsberg is likely the greatest sparkling wine in the business. … “Schramsberg has built a reputation out of quality, dedication and vision. Creating the best possible sparkling in the business is what they’re known for. They don’t stop there. Schramsberg also carries quality stills with their Davies, J. Davies and Jamie brands making exceptional quality Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. “In 1965 the Davies family was captivated by the idea of building a wine company. Jack & Jamie Davies, along with their young brood, found a beautiful spot in Napa Valley. This winery, now 154 years old, is located on...

The Decision to Spend More on Sparkling Wine

The Decision to Spend More on Sparkling Wine

“I love a good value when it comes to sparkling wine, but there are so many occasions that warrant higher price points. In fact, purpose is the single most important part of any sparkling wine purchase. Is it a romantic affair or a graduation? Is it Thanksgiving or a retirement party? Will you be present when the bottle is opened? Generally speaking the import of the occasion leads you to a price. But the truth of the matter is that the premium category does not exist just for special occasions and gifts. Rather it can turn a boring occasion into...

Last-minute gifts that will make the wine lover swoon

Last-minute gifts that will make the wine lover swoon

"Wine people never really get tired of receiving good wine gifts — even when you pick them up at the last minute, which these suggestions can help you with. It's not like these people thoughtfully taste and read about wine all year only to shut it down in December and think: "Please, no great wine gifts — come onnnn, sweaters!" "Just give them something really good (naturally) but also something they don't have or wouldn't get on their own. Let them know you put some thought into the gift, and it will be doubly enjoyable — not just for them...

Crowd-Pleasing Holiday Wines

Crowd-Pleasing Holiday Wines

“As a sommelier at Woodberry Kitchen and wine buyer at Grand Cru, Jack Wells often gets called upon to bring wine to holiday gatherings with his friends and family. In the early days, he’d often reach for personal favorites—obscure and interesting bottles, like orange wines, Pet-Nat, reds from Jura and whites from Juraçon. Then his family started dropping hints that the bottles he loved might not be ideal for a crowd. ‘I began to realize that my geeky-ness wasn’t making people more interested in wine,’ he says. ‘It was too much too fast.’ “Regardless of your knowledge of wine, the...

The Vincast Episode 112 – Michael Brajkovich MW from Kumeu River

The Brajkovich family emigrated to New Zealand from Croatia in the 1930s, bringing with them some experience growing grapes for wine production. After purchasing property just outside of Auckland in the 1940s, the family tended the vineyard for decades until officially launching the Kumeu River brand in 1986. The winemaker is the eldest son Michael, who has not only taken their wines to a world-class level, but also became New Zealand’s first Master of Wine in 1989! Michael was my guest on this episode of The Vincast, sharing his family’s and his own stories. Listen to the podcast on The Intrepid Wino.

A sensational Cabernet/Merlot blend

A sensational Cabernet/Merlot blend

I visited the spectacular Seven Heavens estate in May and have been wishing time away waiting for the wines to arrive in the UK. The estate’s owner, Ambrogio Cremona Ratti, a young man with dauntless vision, and I stood on the terrace overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, 400m high up in the hills, encircled by lush forests, and he didn’t need to explain to me why the estate was called Seven Heavens. We looked down upon the famous Bolgheri wine region, home to wine giants Sassicaia and Ornellaia. This situation provides Ambrogio and his dynamic young winemaker Elena Pozzolini with the...

Holiday Wine Tasting with Hugh Davies

Holiday Wine Tasting with Hugh Davies

“This is Part 2 of an interview with Hugh Davies of Schramsberg Vineyards and Davies Vineyards. This week, we taste a line-up of wines: two sparklers and one Davies Cabernet blends from this historic property. Schramsberg Vineyards date back to the 19th century, when German immigrant Jacob Schram first made his home and started his winery on Diamond Mountain. In 1965, a century later, Jack and Jamie Davies restored the estate and set out to make world-class California sparkling wines. Hugh carries on his family tradition and in a nod to the original founder, sharing their vintage namesake wine with...
