A Vineyard’s Story: Barolo’s Ravera

A Vineyard’s Story: Barolo’s Ravera

"Few landscapes trigger my imagination more than the Langhe Hills of Piedmont, in northwestern Italy. I spent a week there in 2012, and to this day, I remember every inch of ground we covered. "At the time, none of the “cru” sites — named vineyards that offer a unique expression based on their soil and exposure — meant anything to me. We simply wandered until we could wander no more, the grayish dust of the clay-limestone soil covering our shoes. "But as time passed, and as I drank more and more Nebbiolo wines from the area, I began to triangulate the famous cru we...

J. Davies releases 100 percent cabernet sauvignon

J. Davies releases 100 percent cabernet sauvignon

"Stepping away from the tried-and-true wines from their portfolios, the Davies family introduced their inaugural vintage of a wine that may not be made every year, their J. Davies 'Jamie' Cabernet Sauvignon. "During an exclusive unveiling of 'Jamie,' a 2012 vintage, on April 25 to industry trade – such as restaurant and wine store wine buyers – 'Jamie' seemed to enter as if she were Audrey Hepburn wearing pearls and silk stockings. "'The 325-case estate wine grown on Diamond Mountain was an experiment of sorts,' said Sean Thompson, senior winemaker for J. Davies and Schramsberg labels, one that included taking...

Champagne Gosset’s Rare Cuvée Makes US Debut in May Master Class Series

Champagne Gosset’s Rare Cuvée Makes US Debut in May Master Class Series

ST. HELENA, CA (May 2, 2016) — This month, Champagne Gosset will introduce its one-time limited-release bottling, Cuvée 15, at sparkling retrospective tasting seminars in Boston, New York and San Francisco, covering disgorgement dates from 1987 of the winery’s flagship Grande Réserve. Cuvée 15 is a blend of 60 percent Chardonnay sourced from Les Mesnil-sur-Oger, Cramant and Villers-Marmery and 40 percent Pinot Noir from Ambonnay, Aÿ and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. Cellared in 1999, the wine has aged more than 15 years on its lees. The prolonged cellar-aging, with no malolactic fermentation, is what cellarmaster Jean-Pierre Mareigner says allows the wine “to retain...

Piedmont Rises to the Challenge

Piedmont Rises to the Challenge

“The excitement continues unabated from Piedmont, fueled by Barolo, Barbaresco and a handful of other reds from this region in the Alpine foothills of northwestern Italy. The 2011 vintage, warmer than its predecessor, yielded rich, fleshy wines, the best of which offer ripe fruit and lively structure. “The Ravera cru of Novello also fielded some excellent Barolos in 2011, led by the focused and complex Elvio Cogno …”

Best Wines to Pair with Oysters

Best Wines to Pair with Oysters

"Despite the age-old adage not to eat them beyond months that end in the letter 'r,' the return of patio weather almost always signals an intense urge to sit outside slurping oysters on the half-shell with the appropriate wine accompaniment. As far as following rules goes, the r-month suggestion originates from a time when oysters were wild harvested – allowing for their spawning season, when water temperatures are warmer. Nowadays, commercially available oysters are strictly regulated for both safety and sustainability, so you should feel guilt-free when ordering by the dozen this spring. Plus, water temperatures are still cool enough in...

24 Provence Rosés Perfect for Warm Weather

24 Provence Rosés Perfect for Warm Weather

"Just about any wine lover not living in a cave is aware of the explosion of Provençal rosé in recent years. Exports to the United States have boomed, with double-digit growth for the last several years pushing the category to 7 million bottles—and it basically all arrives in spring and is consumed before the end of summer. "With this recent boom comes the best quality yet—the wines are fresh, bright and pure. And rosé from Provence is among the most consistent categories I taste every year, with the vast majority of the wines earning very good ratings of 85 points...

Davies “Jamie” Cabernet Sauvignon, the finest red wine from its Diamond Mountain estate in Napa Valley. 10 Refreshing California Whites

10 Refreshing California Whites

"With the days growing warmer and longer, it’s time to move meals outdoors. Here are some thirst-quenching Sauvignon Blancs and Chardonnays for your next picnic or dinner in the garden. "Cliff Lede shows the elegant side of Sauvignon Blanc. Winemaker Chris Tynan achieved a supple texture and rich flavors by fermenting the wine in a mix of stainless steel, concrete eggs and mostly neutral oak. Contrast that with the succulent juicy fruit and smoky edge of the Grieve from the tiny Lovall Valley in southwest Napa County. "Saracina is raising the bar higher with its unoaked Chardonnay. Founder John Fetzer...
