Early picks, low yields, always delicious

Early picks, low yields, always delicious

"Celebrating the first harvest of the season, Schramsberg brought in pinot noir grapes from the Carneros region on the earliest date in more than a decade,' Hugh Davies said. The latest first pick for the winery was on Aug. 29, 2011, which is more than a month later in the season than this year’s harvest. 'The fickle climate produced a smaller yield, and for some grapes an earlier harvest,' said Sean Thompson, senior winemaker for Schramsberg and J. Davies labels. The harvest celebration was indoctrinated by sabering Schramsberg sparkling wine, and the crushing of pinot noir grapes picked from a hillside...

Beyond Carbonic: A New Era for Beaujolais

Beyond Carbonic: A New Era for Beaujolais

"The general manager of the movie theater where I worked as a teenager loved XTC, particularly the album Skylarking. A year of sweeping up popcorn and tearing tickets was scored by the rich, sonic swells and definably new wave vibe of the album. I loved it, bought my own copy, wore it out. It remained in my mixes until one day I realized I couldn’t stand it. Now I can’t hear 'Ballet for a Rainy Day' without twinges of fake-butter nausea rippling through my psyche. "As unlikely as the correlation may seem—and as much as I regret it—I can’t help but recall...

The tasting of a lifetime: The great first growths of Royal Tokaji

The tasting of a lifetime: The great first growths of Royal Tokaji

"In the wine industry, there are many once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Tasting a wine for the first time, pulling an old vintage out of the cellar, sitting with winemakers and tasting their wines, every wine experience is unique in its own way. But, from time to time a tasting takes place that takes once in a lifetime to a new level. At Pebble Beach Food and Wine in April, a tasting took place that really was the tasting of a lifetime. Since Royal Tokaji started in 1990, they have produced only 10 vintages, made only in exceptional years. Our tasting of a...

Moulin-à-Vent: Proof That Terroir Is Real

Moulin-à-Vent: Proof That Terroir Is Real

"Have you ever wondered if terroir — the concept that grapes can express the site-specific traits of soil, sun-exposure and rainfall in a wine — is real? I certainly have. I love the concept. It makes wine-drinking more than just a pleasure pursuit … it creates an intellectual puzzle as well. The problem is that it rarely shows itself. Sure, winemakers and importers love to tout the terroir of this vineyard and that one, but when the day is done — far too often given all of the talk — their Riesling tastes like a Riesling. Their Pinot Noir, just as anonymous as most. "I’ve come to believe that...

Schramsberg Vineyards Celebrates its 50th Anniversary — With Some Bubbly, Of Course

Schramsberg Vineyards Celebrates its 50th Anniversary — With Some Bubbly, Of Course

"Good-quality California sparkling wine is fairly common these days, but when Jack and Jamie Davies revived Schramsberg Vineyards 50 years ago, that wasn't the case. "Most California bubbly back then was of the cheap, bulk-process variety; only Korbel in Sonoma County and Hans Kornell in Napa Valley were making wines in the traditional Champagne method, in which the second fermentation, which produces the bubbles, occurs in the bottle in which the wine is sold. But they weren't focused on chardonnay and pinot noir, the traditional grapes of Champagne. "It seemed a risky proposition, but Hugh Davies, who now runs the...

This ain’t your granddaddy’s Chablis…

This ain’t your granddaddy’s Chablis…

“Greetings Gentle Reader.  Yr.Mst.Hmbl&ObtSvt begs your indulgence and understanding for my long absence here. I confess feeling for a while as if I had nothing of interest to say.  Things, however, have changed. “I recently had the honor of an invitation to Lunch with Gwenael Laroche, proprietress along with her husband of Domaine Laroche in Chablis. For ethical disclosure, Wilson Daniels the Importer paid for lunch. For personal disclosure, Gwenael was a wonderful and lovely person, whom I was beyond pleased to have spent some time with. “The wines were a pleasure as well.  Now, one will know of Chablis,...
