Looking for a Weekend Cocktail? Let The Polo Bar Provide

By Elise Taylor August 6, 2020 Want a drink right about now? You might as well make it one from The Polo Bar. Since opening in 2015, the midtown restaurant has held steady as one of the hottest reservations in New York thanks to its stylish equestrian decor, scrumptious offerings, and celeb-heavy crowd. (It helps that Ralph Lauren has hosted many a launch there.) But while the food—order the burger!—and reputation may be what brings you to The Polo Bar, their exquisite cocktail menu is what will keep you coming back. General manager Darnell Dodson has curated a list of...

Non-Vintage Champagnes You Should Know

Non-Vintage Champagnes You Should Know

"As famous a Champagne house as Gosset is - it has been in business for over 400 years - it always seems to slip in under the radar. But quality here is extremely high, especially for this non-vintage Brut (note that there is another NV Brut from Gosset called Brut Excellence, which is pleasant, but lacks the complexity of this cuvée). This is a winemaker's wine, a blend of 43% Chardonnay, 42% Pinot Noir, and 15% Meunier, that combines very good acidity with bright fruit and very good weight on the palate. It is ideally suited for foods ranging from...

Interview with Odilon de Varine Chef de Caves of Gosset

Interview with Odilon de Varine Chef de Caves of Gosset

"BEST CHAMPAGNE HAD THE PLEASURE OF INTERVIEWING ODILON DE VARINE CHEF DE CAVES OF GOSSET. THIS MUCH-ADMIRED HOUSE WAS FOUNDED IN 1584 AND IS THE OLDEST WINE PRODUCER IN CHAMPAGNE.  "In its early days GOSSET produced still wines, mostly red, but then in the 18th century, when the wines of Champagne began to bubble, the House embraced the trend. "Today, the GOSSET champagnes are famous for being full-bodied yet very elegant by avoiding malo-lactic fermentation so that the wines keep all their natural fruitiness and freshness. "Odilon De Varine, a joyful champenois of great pragmatism and with a very clear idea of what champagne...

The Best Champagne Bottle You Can Buy, According to 40 Experts

“Our tip for Champagne? Ask and ye shall receive. “We sent out a simple missive to our favorite food and beverage pals a few weeks back: What Champagne are you drinking — or would you recommend drinking — on New Year’s Eve, and why? “The responses? A veritable deluge of bubblies. And diverse, both in style and price point. You’ll see $15 bottles in our list, and some in the high three- and four-figure range. And some of our experts went to different sippers: sparkling wines from New Mexico, Spain and Austria all make an appearance. We even have a...

Still producing great Champagne hundreds of years on, Champagne Gosset

Still producing great Champagne hundreds of years on, Champagne Gosset

“Gosset is a winemaking name that goes back to 1584 and as such, is the oldest house in the Champagne region. It's an awe inspiring heritage and one rarely acknowledged since their origins predate the invention of the world's favourite fizz. Yet back in the 16th and 17th centuries, the red varieties of Pierre Gosset adorned the table of the King of France and were enjoyed alongside the esteemed wines of Burgundy. “Today the firm is owned by the Cointreau family who by all accounts maintain a hands on approach. Located in the tiny Grand Cru village of Aÿ, 5...

Champagne Gosset: Wine First, Bubbles Second

Champagne Gosset: Wine First, Bubbles Second

"'With Champagne Gosset, the wine comes first, the bubbles come later.' — Jean-Pierre Mareigner, Cellar Master at Gosset "Although Champagne is very popular, there are still a number of misconceptions that exist about this sparkling wine. For example, I've said repeatedly that more people need to drink Champagne with food, to pair it with their dinner rather than just enjoy it as a celebratory aperitif. At a recent Champagne lunch at L'Espalier, a couple other misconceptions about Champagne were discussed. Representatives of Champagne Gosset led us through a tasting of a number of their sparkling wines, trying to illustrate and clarify a couple important...

Two Great Champagne Houses: Gosset and Henriot

Two Great Champagne Houses: Gosset and Henriot

"While I was teaching--in an earlier life--I used to work part-time in a local wine shop, to feed my growing passion for wine.  I quickly noticed that customers usually selected wines whose names they were familiar with; this was especially true with Champagne.  In the New York metro area, Veuve Clicquot’s 'Yellow Label' ruled, along with Moêt & Chandon (and its prestige cuvée, Dom Pérignon).  Perrier-Jouet got some attention, but not too many other Champagnes. "I knew that Moêt & Chandon was by far the world’s leading Champagne brand in sales, followed by Veuve Clicquot, and so I was not...

Champagne Gosset’s Rare Cuvée Makes US Debut in May Master Class Series

Champagne Gosset’s Rare Cuvée Makes US Debut in May Master Class Series

ST. HELENA, CA (May 2, 2016) — This month, Champagne Gosset will introduce its one-time limited-release bottling, Cuvée 15, at sparkling retrospective tasting seminars in Boston, New York and San Francisco, covering disgorgement dates from 1987 of the winery’s flagship Grande Réserve. Cuvée 15 is a blend of 60 percent Chardonnay sourced from Les Mesnil-sur-Oger, Cramant and Villers-Marmery and 40 percent Pinot Noir from Ambonnay, Aÿ and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. Cellared in 1999, the wine has aged more than 15 years on its lees. The prolonged cellar-aging, with no malolactic fermentation, is what cellarmaster Jean-Pierre Mareigner says allows the wine “to retain...
